Here is a picture of the ones in Baton Rouge.
The ones on the I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge get hit annually.

I hope river captains can see them better than we can!

It appears that the Baltimore ship may have hit the base of the metal span where it rises off of the concrete supports. Probably the most critical stress point of the entire structure

He failed on the attempt to post a picture, but his overall point may be correct. Don’t know what the FSK bridge had, but they were idiots if they left it unprotected.

I was wondering that this morning. How could they NOT have a fender system on that bridge? They should be on any bridge that has these kind of boats passing beneath.

Because so many people had no idea these existed. The Maryland bridge had none.
Well they're called dolphins and let me help you out

Thanks for the link. I really liked the youtube vid of the precast concrete system.
The Francis Scott Key bridge should of had some type of fender system.

That container ship would still have hit it with a fender system set up for a bridge that size.

what's worse? failing at posting the pic entirely or double-posting the 'fix' response?

I feel like that thing would be useless given how far the bow sticks out.
The Ravenel Bridge here in Charleston doesn't really have them either and it's "new" compared to most bridges in this country. I'll stand up there sometimes and watch the massive container ships go through.
Caught this one going through on a nice day. I assume the Baltimore ship had tugs with it but they would’ve been useless.

Would it even stop a ship of that size?

Not the exact picture the OP was trying to link but here's one that shows the fender.
