And I've maintained throughout this thread that the entire world needs to be involved for a travel ban to actually work now.
Would it be a ban on flights going to and from those areas?
Or, would it be a ban on flights AND passports from those countries? If it included passports, then somebody who flew from Sierra Leone to Paris to New York would still be barred from entering.

Guaranteed the hospital gets sued for not having proper protection.
Though probably true, that is a tough bit of litigation to pursue. Good luck finding a judge and jury that will not give the institution the benefit of the doubt, since CDC was involved and they're saying this is likely caused by poor protocol, top down.

It's not just a different opinion, it's being wrong based upon factual information. It's fine to disagree but the fact is that sitting down west African travel would have a net positive effect on the possibility of ebola getting here from there, specifically
quote:except that, the summation from most in this thread is that the risk management protocol dictates a travel ban and as far as I know, there are no infectious disease experts or policy makers in this thread. Thus this entire thread is full of people's opinions
Like many others have said, it's basic risk management protocols. It's not that complicated.

Someone approved the admission of an Ebola patient, or a team of someones. Somewhere in that team was a person responsible for insuring they had adequate equipment, facility, staff and training to not only treat the patient effectively, that they could protect their staff and other patients in the facility.
I don't see it as that difficult of a case.

Is there evidence that the patient wasn't treated effectively, other than the fact that he died?
that sounded bad

The CDC was not involved in what the hospital was doing. Hospital thoughy they could handle it. CDC thought the hospital could handle it. That's the problem. They are now changing that of course.

Chicken, while I have your ear, can I email you to discuss a name change? This dumb arse user name (I know it's my fault for picking it) completely derails any serious discussions I try and have here because of what the acronym stands for. I'd appreciate at least some consideration of a change if possible.
Pilot, I'll look for the supporting data, but for now and without getting too much into it, you'll just have to trust me.

They sent him home from the ER with antibiotics (which I don't think work for viral infections) after he told them he'd been in Liberia. That seems like a frick-up to me.
They left the ambulance in service for two days after transporting Ebolaboy back to the hospital. That also seems potentially problematic.
Who knows how many people were exposed while he was being triaged in the ER.

The numbers are in: the WHO expects 10,000 cases PER WEEK with a 70% fatality rate.

This was a major failure on their part. Most hospitals are not set up specifically for ebola containment. They already knew this.

I think the unintended consequences of a US only travel ban could be worse than what happened in Texas.
I think you start seeing desperate people do desperate things. I think you see people go to other countries and I think you see people end up in the US and we have no clue where they are.

With a user name like THAT? Surely you jest.
on topic...Ebola is bad.

Not requiring the same safety protocols at hospitals THEY AS THE CDC use when treating Ebola.
