I was thinking an earthquake that causes loss of life but it was admittedly a stretch, especially with the hint Free just provided

this is my guess:

I would break them into 3 groups of 4.

weigh 4 vs 4.

if they are equal, toss them and weigh an original 2 vs 2 new guys. if those are equal, weigh one that has already been weighed vs one of the last 2. if they are equal its the remaining guy.

if the original 4 vs 4 are not equal, the odd ball is in that bunch so you do the same with the unweighed guys.

Here’s a more obscure one:

A woman goes to her mother’s funeral and meets a man. They don’t exchange names or contact information, but she and the man hit it off spectacularly and get along perfectly. The event ends happily, and while the woman is completely smitten with the man and seemingly in love, the following week the woman kills her own sister.

Why?
