I don’t understand what he’s doing but congrats on his success. i know you explain it in the OP but I’m still too dumb.

Nah, its simple: He basically learns about different geographies/topographies/ladnmarks, etc. and uses that knowledge to determine where any random picture/thing is in the world.
He takes a picture, looks at the background, does it have mountains? What kind of trees? What time of the year? Etc. Etc. Uses all the little details to figure stuff out.

As mentioned the concept is pretty simple. They get shown a picture of someplace on the globe and they use context clues like signage, cars, people, landscape, flora/fauna, and etc to guess as quickly and as close as possible to that point on earth.

You are mixing up simple and easy. The concept of geo guessing is very simple: look at a picture and click on the globe where you think it is located. But, at least at the level these guys guess at it is far from easy. Hitting a 100mph baseball is a simple task but for the vast majority of people it is anything but easy.
