If my vote is pending until we have competent and non-corrupt politicians, then my vote is irrelevant anyway.
Has every city or state that has built or maintained major infrastructure raised massive new taxes for each and every project, like our current "leaders" tout as the only solution?

Never.

NIMBYs, corruption and neglect by the state will only get worse.

ASSUMING somebody could convince you that the money would go where it is supposed to go, and ASSUMING we elected a competent governor and non-corrupt legislature, how would you propose to pay for a billion dollar bridge ($2B by the time you build all the expressways feeding it). Tolls could help, but you can't use tolls to match federal funds. There has to be an upfront financial commitment from the state. So how do you do it? Or are you just okay with never doing it?

You will never get an answer.

They don't even know nor care to research how the gas tax is spent already and why it's not enough.

All they care about are talking points and having a political meme mindset.

Usually.

But if you have a solution, please detail it for us.

If Texas had raised the gas tax to fund every major highway construction or maintenance project, then gasoline would cost $10 per gallon over there.

Aww, sorry the talking points are true but don't support your argument. Sucks when the opposition has facts that prove you're full of shite.

The Greenlight 2 tax had widespread support in midcity and south Baton Rouge, along with a handful of precincts in north Baton Rouge within the city limits. However, voters in the northern part of the parish overwhelmingly rejected the 2016 roads tax plan, although they supported Broome. Voters in the southeastern part of the parish did not support the roads tax, nor did they vote for Broome.

I'm guessing that SWB's proposal will basically be an expanded version of Greenlight 2 but with more projects in Northern (Zachary, Central) and Southeastern Baton Rouge with a few beautification and sidewalk projects in north Baton Rouge sprinkled in....since those areas are where the support fell short.

Anyone want to speculate on what would be required to steer more people in SE EBR, Zachary, and Central into supporting it? I would guess routes like Jefferson, Nicholson, Hoo Too Shoe, Joor, Sullivan, Greenwell, and Hooper would be considered for widening. Maybe turn lanes on Choctaw, Lee, and some intersection modifications in mid city.

I read that the school board is trying to head off a possible St George incorporation by constructing a new magnet school on the property they own near the BCBS campus on Bluebonnet.

It was a mistake on her party to talk about the proposal and the means of taxation before the list of projects came out. At least then people could discuss and consider the need for the enhancements. A property tax is going to be a really hard sell as it is - especially with the justifiable distrust people have in local and state government.

House Bill 632

This is the house bill brought to the legislature by a Republican house member from Baton Rouge to increase the gas tax by $.17 then reduced to $.10 which we all know failed. I suggest everyone who is complaining about dedicating funds read the actual bill.

It is very specific as to how the money is spent and what projects get priority funding. It is worded exactly how the protesters on this board demand. Of course I'm sure no one on this board actually read the bill, they just like to jump on the bandwagon and frankly the lack of understanding is disappointing. This is as much of the problem with this state today. No one wants to pay more taxes than they have to and everyone wants the government to be efficient and live within its means. I pay a lot of taxes in three states and I don't want to pay anymore myself.

The actual list of 2005 Megaprojects which would enjoy 50% of the actual funding had the bill passed

However roads, bridges, public schools and libraries amongst other public needs and infrastructure cost money to build and the very ones using them are the ones that should pay. The time (money) of my days spent sitting in traffic is worth tenfold whatever eventual gas tax I might pay at the pump. Think about that. How much money would you save if you shaved just one hour a day out of sitting in traffic? Do that math problem. What are you worth?

I supported the Greenlight Plan because it was very specific as to what roads would be built and they were all built as advertised. I supported the second Greenlight Plan that failed because it was the same. The money was spent and the government was transparent with that funding because we demanded it. Instead of blantantly being an obstructionist and "NO" at all cost do a bit of research, demand transparency, attend a meeting, hold their feet to the fire and make the improvements. If we, as a society have to live within our means than we need to determine what our means are. Then we can decide exactly what we are willing to pay for.

When the Council on Aging slipped a tax in while apparently no one was paying attention this board went ape shite and continued down that path for months including streaming the council meetings and laughing and ridiculing them when they got up to speak or had matching t shirts on. Even made up nicknames, Gravy, Helmet Head etc...

But you know what no one on this board did? Show up and speak at any of the council meetings. That's par for the course on here. Just type and bitch and not actually try to understand the issue and fix it.

So go ahead and use the worn out "cuck" at me but I wish at least some on here would read the definition and actually know what it means.

So all that post did was make you say that? Why not click the links and read the 7 page bill. That is my point. Nobody wants to actually work a little bit to understand what things would actually do.

Don't take my word for it. Read it yourself.

Honestly....that list doesn't go anywhere near as far as I thought it would for the BR metro. Maybe it's a good thing it failed.

Think about this: 11% of the existing .34/gallon gas tax actually goes to roads. ONLY 11%. Where's the frickin money man? I don't like sitting in traffic either. But I've been lied to over and over for forever. When we brought the lottery to Louisiana it was gonna fix our education budget. When the TIMED project was proposed, it was gonna be the panacea for our transportation problems. Yet here we are 20 years later with shitty roads and only one viable east/west route over the MIss River. The lottery pumped lots of money to the state. What did the state do? Cut its share of the money it gave to education because, hey you know, the lottery is bringing in income. Should we explore the waste that is CATS or BREC golf courses? When I pay a fee to LDWF for a reef project or conservation fund, you know what the state does? Raids LDWFs budget and takes that money for something else. Yet you guys want to give more of MY money to the same lying sacks of shite who have screwed me for years? Ain't happening.

This state has zero credibility with me ( and a few others apparently) on fiscal issues. When- and only when- they establish my trust will I agree to new or additional taxes.

Well the old bridge has been closed all weekend so I am sure that played a factor.

Wasn't really closed tho. You just had to go through the hood across from the Stockyards to get past the road closure at the railroad crossing.

Well, first off: almost 50% of that tax goes to the Feds. I don't know what they spend it on.

The $.16 in 1986 dollars for the state is spent on roads, bridges, ferries, canals/waterways, ports, airports, and for some reason state police.

But the .10 raise would have gone entirely to roads and bridges. Meaning that it would have been just about 50% of the total going to roads and bridges.

Now, let's discuss your opposition to that without you bringing up city or parish taxation.

If a republican was governor when that gas tax was proposed, the republicans in the legislature would have passed it without blinking. That would have been a huge win, so can't let a democrat get it.

It is ungovernable because nobody on either side cares about what's good overall, just what's good for their party.

You're gonna tell me the lottery wasn't sold to the voters as a fix for education? Or do you believe the legislature kept funding at the same level once the lottery was up and running?
