BR Metro Council Approves Entergy Fee

BATON ROUGE - The Metro Council approved the collection of a 5% franchise fee from Entergy on some residents' power bills to help offset the shift of nearly $50 million in tax revenue with the new city of St. George gearing up to provide its own city services.
"At a time that we're having budget cuts, breakaways, losing $50 million from St. George and other things, every budget in our government has been cut," Councilman of District 6 Cleve Dunn Jr. said during the meeting.
With the franchise fee, the city-parish can see more than $3 million going into the city. Councilwoman Jen Racca of District 12 says the money will go towards multiple things, but crime prevention is one of the main reasons why they've decided to take this route.
"We're in the middle of a crime wave. To focus on crime, to keep fighting crime, we can't let those agencies that desperately need funds slow down," she said.
Higher electric and gas bills are a mechanism the council has decided to tap into for that purpose. It only applies to unincorporated areas.
"The way that the Entergy representatives relayed it to us and tonight is that there's an expected increase in $3, tonight they said $4," she said.

The unincorporated areas will pay for all the crime in the city limits. This is fricking ridiculous.

I thought they wanted to defund the police

shite you’re right… unfortunately I’m not in STG or city limits so I’m fricked.

Why not put the fee on the areas with the most crime?

Well, yeah, this crime wave apparently just started, and allowing the criminals and their families to pay for their crime is just racist, yo.

first of all, you aren't losing $50M from St. George, b/c that $50M should have been going towards that area of the community anyway. By saying your losing that money just proves why the creation of St. George needed to happen.
and B, you're going to make people that don't live in crime areas pay to help reduce crime in NBR? It amazes me how someone can say this and believe this is right.
And lastly, you're going to use a non gov't entity in Entergy to help collect gov't money from your citizens? What kind of frickery is this?

In order to effectively stop street crime and gun violence, you have to allow officers to be proactive.
Like that have to get out with folks just hanging around in high crime areas

The word is we have too many cops with desk jobs and not enough cops out on patrol.

Wasn't their argument that St. George would not have enough to sustain itself and their opposition was to look after the people in that proposed city?
Sounds like that was total bullshite.
Also - is the metro council is applying this to the entire parish but using it in Baton Rouge for city police officers or is The Advocate misreporting things again? If it's a parish wide collection but earmarked only for BRPD - St. George, Zachary, Central, and Baker are going to have a claim to parts of that revenue.
I'm glad Baton Rouge is getting a new parish/president. Sid might be able to delay a change in that form of government.

Judging by the state of public infrastructure in St. George, that $50 million is needed. "Neglected" is a stronger word than I'd use, but they clearly were a priority.
I hope St. George stands up their government soon, and they seriously consider moving zoning, land use planning, public works, and law enforcement in-house. Their success + continued growth in Zachary and Central might keep the entire parish from sinking.

Interesting that Trump has been rattling the cage on his "first days in office". He's going to do some kind of executive order involving crime and policing in urban areas. No idea what.
Big problem is some local judges and DA's. That's far worse of an issue in New Orleans than in Baton Rouge, but it's still an issue.

Th we parish should all pay for the Sheriff, DA, Assessor, the Clerk of Court and all the other parish wide services.
BR should pay for City of BR services like BRPD, BRFD, and etc.
This new tax is confusing and like most controversial acts emanating from City Hall there has been very little transparency and public discussion about this.
We just had a major election and none of this was discussed.

If it's a parish wide tax but it's going to BRPD.... the metro/council form of government is not long for this world.
Baton Rouge will really be on an island if that happens....at least until they abandon their city charter. Then they'll be EBR parish's problem again.

Honestly it's probably going into a general, unrestricted fund which may be worse. The Advocate just doesn't ask questions like that.

go sit in on a metro council meeting if you want a real eye opener. Stupidity crosses political and racial lines in that room
bonus hilarity when they have to call up the city attorney to explain things to them

Taxation without representation. And the BR council wonders why areas want to break away.
