Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to announce at a press conference this afternoon plans to cleanup the City Park Lakes.
quote:

Several other key entities also will be involved, sources familiar with the project say. LSU’s Real Estate and Facilities Foundation, which owns four of the lakes in the six-lake system, will serve as the facilitator of the multiyear project, which has been estimated to cost anywhere from $50 million to $80 million.
BREC, which owns the other two lakes, will also play a key role.

The city-parish will also put up some funds from its MovEBR tax collections.

I think its great that they are finally doing something about the lakes...BUT don't use funds that are earmarked for road improvements.

BATON ROUGE LAKES MASTER PLAN

edit: Is this just a political ploy by JBE right before the election? Article says this is just an announcement of the plans.

This is exactly why I vote no on every single tax proposed. They never spend the money on what the tax is intended for.

The voters approved this because it was for road/traffic and pedestrian infrastructure. It even had a listing of specific projects, none of them was for lake rehab.

This is fricky.

It does appear in the masterplan that some work will be done on some roads around the lake... but still that's a ridiculous price tag.

Just how the new 110 ramp was opened the day before the elections.

I do not agree with them using those funds for this project, but it looks like there is a ton of new pedestrian infrastructure in that plan.

Couldn't find any statues to take down. Cleaning up the lakes will certainly reduce the crimes.

I guess he needs more votes from the heart of Baton Rouge. Where have you been the last several years on this project, John?

Is that legal? You can't just take money earmarked by election to do whatever the frick you want with. I'm gonna need one of our crack legal minds to weigh in on this (preferably BEFORE you smoke the crack, though).

I’m pretty sure there was a project or two in the “beautification” portion of the tax that supported areas around the lakes.

But the timing of this announcement is so painfully obvious that JBE needs the votes from middle and upper class whites to get 50% + 1.

I guarantee you that they could do this job for about a tenth of the cost if it even needs to be done. This money is buying votes and and going in someones pocket. This morning's freeze did most of the work already for goodness sake.

I'm not a fan of not using tax dollars for the purpose for which they were intended, but the lakes are sort of BR's "crown jewel" so to speak, them and the LSU campus. I'd love to see them cleaned up.
