These are low paying jobs with very few benefits. Sure bus drivers may only work 20 hours a week but have you ever driven anywhere with a kid or kid(s) in the car? Imagine that x25 unrestrained with no AC.

FedEx starts at $38k.
FedEx also runs routes day and night, 6 days a week, the whole year.
And the drivers actually have to get off their seats to do things.

we need all 50 teachers for after and before school duty, etc
Like a poster said, if it were a good job there would not be a shortage. This is a problem plaguing MANY Parishes btw.

The only workable solution is to reduce the number of kids riding the bus.
Give parents a monthly $50 gift card if they. bring their kids to and from school.
The bus drivers are mad because they don’t want to work more hours driving more routes.
It would be three hours in morning and three hours in afternoon. At that point you are almost full time.

Everything you’re saying would be specific to the specific school.

Unsure why you took my comment as an indication that I was ‘upset’
Back to reality, let’s discuss the fact that youve proposed that we consider the input of bus drivers who say its hot driving a bus in the summer.

Here in comal county tx,
High school, middle and elementary all have staggered start times and we have a bus driver shortage, but the kiddos get home on time.

After august everyone will forget there isn’t AC on the bus until this time next year.

Man, you seriously need to sit this one out.

The issue they have is they want them to work longer hours for no extra pay. They wouldn’t mind it to much if they got paid for their extra work

If high schools start at 7 - there will be even more drop outs.
Its been a while, but pretty darn sure I was getting up at 6am in high school.

All I can think is these people don’t live in Baton Rouge or places like it. These drivers have to drive around kids, many who are delinquents, in BR traffic, in dangerous neighborhoods when it’s 110 degrees. They get no support from administration when there are issues on the bus and if they do try to discipline the kids they often have parents trying to fight them. I can’t even imagine what it would take to get me to take that job.

Did you go to class with a guy that was awaiting his trial for murder?

One of my good friends is an electrician. He drives the bus then expects to be home at a certain time to meet his helper and go wire houses. He can’t take 2 more hours out of his day.
Another friend who drives a bus works for a Lumber yard and they expect him there at 830, not 10.

Solid points.
And I have no viable solutions or suggestions to improve the situation for these people working a second job as an EBR school bus driver. Tough way to earn extra income , which has likely always been an easy way to earn extra income, but has suddenly become challenging.?.
Maybe Id say that with all things in life we have to take the good with the bad.
Did your friends who drive a bus as a 2nd job tell you how good they had it before they ran into the scheduling challenge they are faced with this year? Are they strong enough to adapt and still do their primary job with their secondary job being inconvenient?
If not, can they find a different secondary job that they wont cry to you about?
Do you catch my drift here?

How? It doesn’t seem possible with the current times. Do they work evening or overnight jobs? Can’t get in 8 hours between drop of and pickup at the current school times.

This is entirely normal in larger cities. Are you gonna have elementary, middle, and high school bus drivers with their own busses running one half-hour route per day? Or would you be smart and have one driver with one bus drive three routes each morning and afternoon for the three different schools at staggered times?
More simply, would you, as a tax payer, rather pay for the service or pay 3x for the exact same service? Call me crazy but I’d rather pay 1x than 3x for the same result.

I know of one who owns a tire store and another, a small nursery.
