It always strikes me as a little sad that so many people think our very imperfect judicial system will only convict and execute guilty people.
Came here to post this exact thing. Were all of these people guilty of the crime they were being executed? Probably. Probably isn't good enough though. If even one of them was innocent, then not only did we execute an innocent man, we also tortured him.
I don't know about you, but IMO if we execute 100 people and 99 are guilty and 1 is innocent, then the whole system is flawed. To much politics and agendas to put the power of executing American citizens in the government's hands

It's like they think that either our system is perfect or that killing an occasional innocent person is ok.
if i was innocent and stuck in prison for the rest of my life, i'd rather the death penalty
I don't understand why the executions arent just a bullet to the head. so much cheaper

This is interesting for anyone reading and living in Louisiana. From the site, this was reported just Wednesday, 4/12/17
LINK
Louisiana Legislature Considers Bipartisan Measure to Abolish Death Penalty
Senate Bill 142, which would eliminate the death penalty for offenses committed on or after August 1, 2017
Anyone know this?

No system is perfect. Compensate the family of the wrongfully killed, and bring on the next prisoner to die.

It's pretty logical. If we have an imperfect system (does anyone disagree?), then the probability of them executing an innocent person is not zero. Over a long enough time span that probability turns into a likelihood. Killing a thousand guilty people isn't worth killing one innocent one.

Yeah.....
Yeah it is.
Edit: it cost an avg of 30k to house a prisoner for a year. 999x30000= just shy of 30million dollars you save in ONE YEAR.
I'd say that the life of one American is worth less than 30million a year.

America has come a long way...

It always easier to kill innocent people when it's not you or yours.

First no it's not.
Second, I don't care what someone does to a loved one, I wouldn't want the death penalty sought. That means I have to deal with for the next 20 years rather than move on with my life. It takes this long because we often get it wrong.
Third, we need to just do away with it. The DP is just a money pit that serves no purpose over LWOP.

That sounds perfectly reasonable until it's you or someone you care about getting railroaded by a DA who cares nothing about the truth and is just trying to pad their win rate. Compensation doesn't bring the innocent back to life or comfort the grieving families of those wrongfully executed.
It all comes down to whether or not you value the life of the wrongfully murdered the same as the wrongfully executed (or the families of those same people). I do.
ETA: For those of you making the $ argument, consider that a large chunk of that cost is legal fees of those fighting their death sentences. Abolish the DP and the cost for housing them goes way down.

Serious question- which do you think is more expensive - the death penalty or life in prison?

We need to express lane that shite. Zero reason it should take 20 years to kill a prisoner.

False.

30k a year to house a prisoner. Say they live 40 years in jail before dying. That is over a million bucks for one guy to sit in a cell and rot.
That is a complete and utter waste.
A 9mm round sure is a frick ton cheaper.

I quite clearly laid out my logic earlier.
I'm not sure most people would be ok with the death penalty if they really thought it would mean killing innocent people.
This doesn't seem to sway you.
Let's try another route- do you think people aren't convicted or executed for political gain? Re-elections, campaign contributions, kickbacks?
