I've recently gotten some Tecova boots (Lizard, Calfskin, and Ostrich) so I'm figuring out how best to take care of them. Right now I clean/condition them every month with either exotic or leather conditioner brushed on. Then I buff on some neutral shoe polish wax with a drill and fabric buffing head. Then coat them with a spray on leather protector. When not being worn they all have cedar shoe tree inserts with expanding toe.

How much of this is overkill or is there anything I'm not doing that I should be?

Don't really do anything to be honest. Wipe the mud and dirt off and call it a day.

That's cool but I actually want these to last and to look nice.

Sounds like overkill to me.

Always use the cedar foot trees to keep them from creasing and keeping their shape. Use these in every nice dress shoes or boots you have.

Otherwise I use Bick 4 exotic and a rag when it looks like they need them. Probably every month or two. I have the Caymen Tecovas that still look new only using this.

My red wings went 10 years and only got rid of them as the sole was slick.

Oil with neetsfoot oil two coats when bought new. Used hair dryer to heat leather and open pores.

Every 8 mo or so od wipe down and re brush oil on.

After 4 or 5 coats over the years I I do it anymore..

Just the way Cowboys did back in the 1800's.

My three pairs are by no means "dress" boots. My every day wear, I mink oil them once every 3 or 4 months. My "nicer" pair get polished. My steel toes would typically get mink oiled every 3 or 4 months, too. But since covid, we seldom go out in the field compared to before covid.

I really only wear work boots. But I use mink oil once a month and it keeps the leather looking good. Because I don’t buy cheap work boots, I want them to last.

This.

Double H's get the mud and dirt cleaned off as needed and and mink oil as needed. Mink oil is usually once or twice per year for me.

Tony Lama's get cleaned with warm water, dried and and neutral polish as needed-also about once per year.

Cedar tree shoes in all of my leather footwear. I don't have any "exotics."

I just put them on and take them off. I rarely wear or buy nice enough boots for all that. But when I have.

This all you really need to do and the inserts are good too. In my opinion the wax and leather protector is overkill. It really comes down to what you are doing in them.

Sorry, I don’t wear boots, despite my handle.

Sounds crazy, but I've been using the same leather cleaner and conditioner on my boots that I use for car. It seems to work very well

Perhaps you should have clarified in OP that you only want to hear certain types of care regimens.

I clean them and put on some waterproofing leather condition every now and then when they start to look rough
