Losing accreditation won't shut down the zoo, as the article notes it's pretty unusual to be accredited in the first place.
No, its pretty standard for legitimate zoos to be AZA accredited. I would imagine losing it would prevent them from access to some funding/research money.

I’m used to it, how’s the boy?

If anyone has followed this closely, it is becoming more evident that the director of BREC let the zoo run down, that she hired a firm to study locations, feasibility, and then come back and tell her what she wanted to hear.
BREC hasn't kept the zoo up for a reason, they want a new one.
BREC has over 50 million dollars in reserve, they should have been keeping the zoo up, improving little by little, adding new exhibits little by little and building a good zoo for a parish (county) our size.
Instead they dropped the ball, and yes I suspect they are going to tell us it's going to cost 100 million to regain accreditations which coincidently is the same amount it would cost to build a new one.

I'm glad its been that easy for you. Why am I being charged for something I pay for already? Why are you ok with that?

I'm not sure how anyone can come to any other conclusion. And I am not here knighting for the location. It's not as ideal as it was 30 years ago. But BREC admins have been neglecting the Zoo on purpose.

A top zoo is a destination place.
It's not a convenience,
If BREC had a top zoo relative to our circumstances, people would plan to go there.

They've been needing to rebuild it for 5-10 years now.

I agree. They may not be putting it exactly where I'd like, but a good zoo is a really nice amenity.
So is the Children's Museum.

Baker?
They can't even get people from Baker to buy a ticket.

The fact that they have $50 million in reserves means that the next time a tax renewal comes up, it should be voted down. There’s no reason for a public agency in charge of parks in Baton Rouge should have so much excess funds on hand. Vote NO on any tax renewal for BREC or the Library system.

Exactly, the Children's Museum draws from all over and is a destination place.
If BREC let's that decline, it's attendance will decline too.

Yes. We like to see BR fail.
Is this a Nola vs BR thread or a St George thread?
Maybe for some. I hate Nola and BR equally.

At some point an old zoo will have to remodeled. I don't see the point in doing that if they are going to have to relocate anyway. I'm sure that was their opinion for years.
I'd honestly like to see Cortana demolished and replaced by a new zoo. That's a much better location than where it is now. Fairgrounds is probably second best considering how tight real estate has become in Baton Rouge.
Either way, the new zoo needs to be appropriately awesome considering it will serve a metro area of 850,000.

For BREC purposes, NBR includes Central and Zachary. That is one thing I feel people wanting the move forgot. They were so disparaging towards NBR. When in this case it isn't just ghetto.

EBR Parish taxpayers are not building a zoo to serve the metro area.
The zoo is there to serve EBR parish and not Pointe coupe, Ascension, West Feliciana, East Feliciana, W Baton Rouge, Livingston and Iberville.
Neighbors are welcome of course, but in reality they should pay more to get in, but I don't know if that is practical.

For them to straight up reject it, it must be significant with no easy path forward.
