They are given a list of why they did not meet standards and are given a time period, to meet said standards and request another inspection.
From the article:

examiners expressed broad concerns regarding dated exhibits that are not reflective of modern zoological practices, along with an aging infrastructure which makes repair and maintenance exponentially difficult. Additionally, examiners closely monitored the discussions regarding potential zoo relocation and investments in a more sustainable, modern location.

Less than 10% of animal exhibitors registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture have achieved AZA accreditation, a distinction that BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo has held for 40 years consecutively that is driven by a rigorous evaluation process required of AZA members every five years. At last count, there are 232 AZA Accredited institutions out of approximately 2,800 licensed animal exhibitors nationwide.

The communities surrounding the zoo need to step up and fund whatever improvements need to happen.

I am still confused as to why zoo's are publicly funded.
zoos
And the BR zoo works with LSU to provide work with live animals for students with majors that require it.
Losing accreditation won't shut down the zoo, as the article notes it's pretty unusual to be accredited in the first place.

this is what's gonna happen. I have sauces.
these inspections were done a while back but wasn't released.
now BREC is gonna throw out some obscene price that it's gonna cost to regain accreditation. this will not be passed by baton rouge residents and then BREC will be forced to consider closing.
this will put relocation back on the table without the opposition

The Zoo issue is interesting to me. Whereas you usually have Central and Zachary siding with SBR and other areas of BR, you have Central, Zachary and Baker siding with NBR.
If I am being honest, I kind of believe the conspiracy theory that BREC let it go down in order to move it. It gets worse everytime I go there.
I also hate BREC with most fibers of my being.

Those 232 are probably real zoos. The remaining 2,568 or so are probably your truck stops with a few snakes, or dead tigers, or aligator pits. Not legit zoos.
So, lulz SJWs

Yeah I assume the Tiger Truck Stop in Gross Tete was unaccredited.

Why do you hate BREC? Most of the attractions I have seen of theirs are very well kept and entertaining. However I don’t claim to know anything of their politics or PR and do note that the zoo has continually gotten run down.
I’m really just curious why you hate them

North Baton Rouge don't care. Southern is always on the margin of losing accreditation, but just keep gravy train rolling.

Great work NBR; you make us so proud!

BREC has let every park in Zachary go down with the exception of two recently built parks. They were given the land decades ago for the older parks, for free. In return, they recently built a dog park with a walking track around two ponds which is admittedly nice. It has a skateboard area and some basketball goals. They also built a disc golf course in the middle of nowhere. The older parks that they have had for decades are basically mowed once a month, if then. If you want a good laugh, ask them if you can use the lights for baseball practice or softball practice at any of the various parks.
They maintain a 50 million dollar fund balance.

Tons of "zoos" on this list. And their lack of accreditation doesn't hamper their goals/mission in any way.
A good example is Bayou Wildlife Park, under Texas. I've brought my kids there several times. Very few animal enclosures. No miles of concrete walking paths. But tons of animals, tons of direct interaction with the animals, a safari type tram tours the park, exotics from 19 countries, you can feed many of the animals by hand. It's just as enjoyable an experience as what you consider to be a "zoo". But the AZA would never accredit it b/c it doesn't follow their zoo template.

Accreditation is not required to be successful and profitable.

They ask you schedule a time and charge a fee?

Which is apples and oranges to having accreditation and losing it.
