At least this is relatively healthy for the coast.

Not ideal in the short term for the sportsmen and commercial fishermen

yeah, I know it sucks for some, but if the man made levee wasn't there, I'd assume it would naturally happen much more often, so you can't really be against it.

I agree and some equivalent should be built on the west side.

Call me kooky but using the Wax Lake outlet as a model, a spillway or outlet channel should be built into Lake Des Allemands to freshen up that basin and bring some sediment down into Barataria Basin.

Probably going to need some levees for the low spots and Pleasure Bend.

With water flowing fast and high, the U.S. Coast Guard may also put limitations on how fast ships can travel on the river.

You should've seen the ship that passed my dock last night. Pilot gave 0 fricks. Shouldn't be a speed limit, they should just shut all the traffic down.

On the next edition of LivePD “River Cop Edition” we take you to the Mississippi River where officer Thibodeaux is pulling over speeding ocean freighters as they navigate a high river event.

They’re only opening a few bays. It not like they are pulling every single pin. They are going to try and limit the least amout of water into the lake as they can.

What does this ultimately do to Lake Ponchatrain?

Just in the last decade it seems the Miss River has been unusually high - hope it's not a trend. Several Bonnet Carre openings. One Morganza opening.

This is basically how I feel about the road in front of my house. I'm tired of hearing cars drive by and it's dangerous when I go out to the mailbox.

shut it down.

Crazy that the spillway was built in the early 1930s and has only been opened 11 times. This is set to be the 4th time in 10 years.

Where are all the global warming bozos now?

The road through the spillway dates closes. It's under water.
Airline Hwy is elevated over the spillway, so it's not affected.

It is most certainly a trend. I won't even get in to the climate change thing because that throws people in to a hissy fit and they miss some more important, but we are seeing an increase in river levels due to increased runoff from development. That is a fact.

From a 2016 article the last time they opened all 350 bays.

It takes 3 weeks to open all bays so if they’re only opening half this time they will have it done in 10 days I supposed. Then they’ll closing them as soon as they finished opening then.

quote:

eutrophication, a condition where the high nutrient levels causes blooms of phytoplankton, tiny plants, that then die and decompose, using up oxygen and causing fish kills. In past openings, blooms of toxic blue-green algae during much warmer spring and summer months have resulted in banning of swimming and boating on parts of the lake.

Scientists also will be attempting to capture endangered pallid sturgeon, and their look-alike cousin, shovelnose sturgeon, as they move into the spillway. The fish will be returned to the river. After the spillway is closed, additional surveys will be done for the fish.

They also will be on alert for the movement of invasive Asian carp into the lake and its tributaries. Officials hope to attach sonic transmitters to up to 25 Shovelnose Sturgeon and 25 Asian carp to analyze their movements.
