What are those feet measuring? The river is much deeper through N.O. Are those feet above sea level?
River gauge measurements are the height above sea level, not water depth

Those numbers refer to stage, not depth.

Yes those are feet above a datum like msl

Crawfish prices are going up
They might do so shortly, but the price to farmers and fishermen dropped under $2/lb last week. I expect it could jump back up as holy week approaches but your post is incorrect

Will depend also on the state of the levees in northeast Louisiana. shite is about to get pretty serious up there in the coming days.

There are plenty of towns and houses in the spillway between Morganza and the Gulf.

Here is my idea for this.

Why not build a channel and levees to capture the water from smaller Morganza openings to avoid flooding the pastures and farmland in the basin so the Atchafalaya takes up more water than flushing out of the lake and the Mississippi Sound for minor openings. Now for a major event, you still have the Bonnie Carre that can open and when Morganza opens fully you still flood the basin, pastures and farmland be damned. Of course you could just allow more water out of Old River Control Structure and not need a channel.

If we are worried about flooding Morgan City, they are protected to 21 feet and I think the highest it got recently was 10.3 feet in 2011. Also, St. Mary finally built a floodgate in Bayou Chene to prevent the water from coming around to flood the Lake Palourde area.

Also, more water and sediment would continue to aid the St. Mary area in delta growth at the Wax Lake Outlet and Atchafalaya Deltas.

The river isn’t high here yet. It shouldn’t be an issue.

And what will this do to spillway crawfish prices?

The only guarantee is that prices will rise based on the anticipation of it opening and then rise again if it opens.

The river is jumping more than 20 feet in 12 days (on the ntz gauge) Looks like my camp will get 1.5 feet of water in it. It would be nice if they would start letting some water through morganza but they aren't unless we get more rain.
