Boat and its not really close imo I use my pool almost every day from april to october

My boat can sit in my garage for 4 months and the only thing I do is occasionally plug in the battery charger.

Can your pool sit there for 4 months and you do nothing to it?

They probably could have saved a decent amount of money buying a 3 BR house instead of a 4 BR.

100% true. So many houses build since the mid 1970s are far larger than they actually need to be. It costs a lot in additional energy, maintenance, etc over 50 years of ownership.

I might have 35k in mine over 10 years if you count gas and everything.

You are getting value out of it.

I'd use it like 5 times a year at best, but my kids are very young. It's one of those things that I KNOW I wouldn't get value out of. Maybe one day I'll get one, but not anytime soon.

The asterisk here is that I'm a cheap bastard. I sometimes look at a cheap aluminum boat just for fishing so I can develop a hobby away from the house. But even those are far more than I thought they were.

I don’t think any of them are a waste. You have to ask yourself how often will you use it? Then decide if the cost is worth it to you?

This. We use our boat 2-3 days a week from April until deer season. Then randomly when we have warm "winter" weather.

If we had a pool it would also get a lot of use but frick cleaning the mud out every time we get water from high tide/tropical storm/hurricane.

A pool is a hole in the ground, a boat, a hole in the water. Both, you pour money into. As with anything, it’s what you and your family get out of it!

I had a camping trailer for years, it saved me money.

My house came with a pool. I never had a pool before I got the place, and at the time (during Covid) this was the only house in this area for sale.

Not saying I wish we didn't have a pool. We do use it a lot. And since it came with the house, I didn't have to write the checks for installation or deal with the headache of getting it ready.

But Louisiana doesn't just get rain here and there - this area gets TORRENTS where 2-3" fall within an hour while a 20-30 mph wind whips around. It's common in the summer. And that dirties the pool every damn time. And since we use it often, there's at least some maintenance that has to happen fairly often even if it's just netting the damn thing.

I know that if I used a boat regularly it would probably require even more hands on maintenance. And storage. But there is definitely a lot to keeping a pool around too.

WTF? $500K?

Yeah, for a yacht.

I got a real nice used 18.5 footer for $14k back in 2021, and it's been a blast with minimum upkeep and insurance isn't much either.

I’m gonna say none of the above.

I have the pool and whole home generator.

Growing up poor, those things seemed like uber luxuries. Today, my kids, wife and I use that pool damn near daily from April to October. And the hot tub during the winter.

I’m a sucker for not losing power. Been in the house for 3 years now, maybe had it kick on for 48-60 hours total… worth it.

Not sure if you realize this but you're making an argument for boat being a bigger waste here

nothing practical about any "luxury" item, you just have to decide whether you want it or not, there is no financial justification for it except how much you enjoyment it gives you and if that makes it worth it to you

The pond would be good for you.

Yeah... Or the pool.

I have all 3 and the most expensive by far is the pool. No one tells you that the damned salt chlorinators only last 3-5 years tops. I've got to replace another one right now. Around $1100 minimum.

One thing I'm seriously considering to make me feel like I'm enjoying it more is to buy a pool chiller to keep that thing more like 78 in the summer instead of 95. If I had that, I'd be taking a dip daily.

Boat is a ski boat and we used it enough last year to say it was worth it. The kids love it. So I love it. Have only used it once this year because of work schedule. That always makes me think I'm just wasting space with it. Maybe we'll get out more often in September when the crowds die down.

The generator. I do think $20K whole house generators are not worth it. But, I did buy a $5K PTO-driven 40KW/80KW generator that I run with my tractor when really needed. That easily runs my whole house if I turn off pool equipment. Have only used it once in the last year.

I have all three, pool is much more maintenance.

Use the boat on the weekends in the warm months, pool almost everyday during the summer.

Boat requires maintenance at the beginning of the season. Sits in it's slip at the lake and is ready to go when we show up.

Pool came with our house, had one at our last house, was the selling point for my wife to move way out here in the country.
- Surrounded it with 2,500 sq ft of stone, kitchen, pergolas. We spend alot of time out there.
- Our master opens up to the pool, nice waking up and seeing the sparkling blue water.

Overall question is, what do you want to spend your money on? Or do you plan on just saving until you are too old to enjoy it?

I was making an argument that a pool is a giant time suck due to the daily maintenance and once the newest wears off it really sucks.

right, but you're also saying you have something you don't use (sitting in the garage for months). Thus waste.

Depends where you live. My parents don't get a full load of fuel during tough situations because the infrastructure isn't exactly robust in Watson LA. It's basically useless when everyone is pulling a load.

I have a lot of stuff just sitting there that I don’t use for months: lap top, PS5, cars, etc… But they sit and ready for me to use. And they don’t require daily maintenance.
