Surprised no-one mentioned the Korean war yet. The human waves and conditions those guys had to endure.

people are too lazy to educate themselves, if it's not easily available on google(which doesn't seem to do a very good job of fact checking,) they believe the revisionists

There's a reason why it's called the "Forgotten War" and why the veterans who fought it came from what we call the "Silent Generation."

D-Day itself wasn’t actually that bloody except for Omaha.

Meh. I think we won in Iraq in the end.

Can you explain to me how we lost in Iraq then? We invaded the country, we defeated its army and toppled its government, then set up a new government that remains in place into the present day. While we still have a presence in the country, we have successfully trained up their military to a point where they can preside over their own defense.

And it was only one sector of Omaha that was bad.

A hypothetical from an egghead at a government think tank arguing for more intervention in the region doesn't bolster your case.

Current Iraqi govt is Shia dominated (Iraq is Shia majority) and cozy w Iran. They nearly fell last time I was there post US withdrawal. Some of the Sunni populace in outer provinces felt govt had abandoned them and extremists were able to take over. Attacks spread to outskirts of Baghdad putting Iraqi govt in crisis.
I wouldnt say it was a resounding success but not a complete failure either.

I think that’s because we lost the political war, both internationally and at home.

There's nothing liberal about it. It was referred to as the "War of the Rebellion" and the "Great Rebellion" by many people during and immediately after the war. When the official records of the war was finally published by the U.S. government, the full title of them was: "The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies in the War of the Rebellion."

I think about it often.. how brave and badarse those kids were riding in that boat across choppy seas into the teeth of a madman who knows you’re coming and has crisscrossed the beaches with machine guns waiting for you.
And they saved the world. Thankful for
Them for sure.
My uncle was there.
He said they had no clue how bad it was going to be.
None of them thought they were going to be shot before they even got to the beach.

Seeing this number of casualties and it being the bloodiest battle of the revolutionary war really puts into perspective how small of a war it was manpower wise.
There were a whole lot less people back then in general. Vs the population size it was a HUGE loss.
In the 1860s, the largest Southern cities by population were:
New Orleans, LA: 168,675
Charleston, SC: 40,522
Richmond, VA: 37,910
Mobile, AL: 29,258
Memphis, TN: 22,623
Savannah, GA: 22,292
Petersburg, VA: 18,266
Nashville, TN: 16,988
Norfolk, VA: 14,620
Wheeling, VA: 14,083 (Note: West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1863)
