Folks smoke weed in my apartment building and it’s coming through the walls that are shared between the apartment above me. Not just a little bit of smell, my entire apartment gets filled all day and night and now my clothes are starting to have lingering weed smell. Would putting a couple thick coats of shellac based smell blocking primer help reduce the issue? Trying to find a solution with my landlord and was thinking of offering this idea up before I started trying to find ways of getting out of the lease.

I’m sick of smelling weed everywhere. City streets, stores, even at traffic lights. It’s almost worse than cigarettes.

I don’t have a problem with what people do in their own homes, as long as it doesn’t impact others. But this is affecting me daily. I’ve tried everything I reasonably can, keeping windows open (which won’t be feasible during colder months), running the AC, and using two commercial-grade air purifiers. The smell only improves when the smoking stops.

Can you ask where they're getting it from first? Sounds like gas.

Move. Only solution. Your apartment complex is trashy and your landlord could help you, but apparently won’t.

If it's that cheap-arse skunk weed that's everywhere now, I could definitely see it embedding into his personal belongings.

Blue air Air Purifier

It's not cheap, but one of these will filter just about any smell from a home. I've use it for all different kinds of smells, animal, smoke, varnish, takes all of it out. Filters aren't cheap either but they work.

Move. There is nothing else to be done and it will only get worse. I don’t know how landlords deal with this.

I know there is a contingent here who believe weed is the most wonderful cure all, but if beer smelled this bad even while simply driving around town, going into stores, and other simple everyday events, people would bitch about it, too.

1. Knock on the neighbors’ door and have a conversation about it

2. If they don’t change habits, call the landlord

No real solution.. but it is a real problem… complain to the landlord.. apartment or condos rented out? … if condos tell landlord then contact hoa..
If apartments…. move if required.. complain .. and break contract if required .. landlord eats the breakage..

Fwiw I have rentals.. my tenant was smoking a lot on the back porch.. wake and bake until midnight .. as you described other owners had smell in their units.. had to walk through it from cars etc.. hoa told me to address it.. I talked to them they stopped for a bit.. but then started again.. fwiw it was not inside my unit.. if so my contract is no smoking .. I would have evicted them asap ..
end result it was a problem and when it came time to re up the lease I said no..

I doubt anything you do will really stop it.. it gets through external vents.. ac.. walls.. suprise their landlord allows this.. gonna be a hard unit to lease to next person..

My daughter is moving to Denver. I went with her to look at apartments, and in just about every complex (even really nice ones) there was a vague waft of weed smell in the air.

Is it legal there? If not, call the cops; if so, move.
