This is the new normal, and why paying customers will pay more for goods and services.
It's my understanding that most businesses will not try to stop shoplifters because it's more hassle than it's worth since they won't be put in jail or made to pay restitution.

I saw this happen at a downtown Safeway the other night.
The guys did it in an interesting way from what I could tell - they paid for the first half of the order and then informed the clerk they were taking the remainder. After a discussion the manager came out and essentially let them have 1/2 of the stuff (but got them away from paying customers first). I slowly loaded up my car so I could see how it played out.
ETA: there was paid security in the building but they clearly were instructed to not get involved. Was only the clerk and the store manager who addressed the pillagers.
Black folk can literally get away with murder in Portland - they should move up here em masse and prey on white liberal guilt

Stores need to have bouncers that are employed solely to stop shoplifters in the parking lot. Have a few by the door and a few patrolling the parking lot, all with walkie talkies and dispatched through a security center on location. It would be a risky job, but people would jump do it for $20/hour.

Read a story in the LA Times about how Walgreens has been closing stores in California because of this. There are no prosecutions so people are just stealing left and right. People saying you'd see sidewalk vendors near the Walgreens selling stolen goods from the Walgreens. Insane.
Don't want to fill jails with petty crimes but, at the same time, you'd think someone leaving Lowes with a cart full of shite has committed a greater crime based on the value of what they've taken.
DA's trying to lessen jail crowding and give people a break and, of course, these pieces of shite have to abuse the situation. It's why we can't have nice things.
