I was once confronted by a table of angry women complaining their shrimp cocktail was cold
Woman orders meal and begins with a starter, chooses a vichyssoise. Begins eating and becomes irate because it’s cold, summons waiter to complain that her soup is cold, to which the waiter informs her that it’s how the soup is served. She then summons for the manager and he informs her of the same, and she gripes that it should have been put on the menu that it is a cold soup. The manager asks her if she questioned her server what it was before she ordered it and she said that since it was a soup she assumed it would be hot. Customer then throws a fit, and manager comps the soup, and ALL OF THIS because she was food ignorant, and that’s fine, but more than anything she was too lazy to pull her smart phone out and google before she ordered it, or simply asked the waiter what a vichyssoise is before she ordered it. NOW, the restaurant has to take a hit for customer’s ignorance and laziness.
This is where the customer is NOT always right, but still gets what they want because you are dealing with unreasonable, entitled, ignorant masses who should be embarrassed, but are too unprincipled and ignorant to know that they should be embarrassed.
These are the same people who then want to go to a restaurant and act as if you are their personal chef, and they want to write a new menu for you to cook just for them, rather than choosing what’s on the menu, and are irate when it costs more to pull it off if they are even willing to do that for you.
Let me tell you something... Work in the service industry at any capacity for any significant amount of time and you soon come to the realization that the Masses really are Asses, and no, they are not always right.

I love that dumb people think "the customer is always right" is a law or something.

It's pretty obvious they were prepared for confrontation because they were filming. However they didn't film the cordial part where they were offered a free dessert nor when they refused and demanded their food plus $50 worth of drinks be on the house because they done told everyone that they was frontline heroes and the food was subpar.

I hate cold fries but what I hate more than that, is when you get fries and they are hot to the touch but they are soggy and taste like they haven't been cooked all the way
That kinda fry bothers me more

I've had this exact same thing happen with a vichyssoise.
I also lost a job over a dispute with a young gentleman wearing a Bulls jersey that told me I was an idiot when he kept ordering BBQ'ed oysters as an entree and we didn't sell them that way. We had 'chargrilled oysters' as an appetizer but not as an entree. So there was double confusion which I can see and understand what the guy was saying, but he didn't say from the appetizer menu and it was during the ordering of the entrees that the dispute started. We were strictly told to tell customers that we didn't have BBQ'ed oysters, our oysters were Chargrilled.
Regardless, it got out of hand when he called me an idiot. They complained, got a new server and I was let go the next day after they continued to escalate the issue and made it all about race.
I'll never forget when the manager walked away, I was a few tables over and the ghetto bitch looked at me and said very loudly 'How ya like me know?".
Oh, I wish I would have answered that question truthfully. If I would have known I was getting fired the next day, I would have let her know exactly how little I liked her now.

They even do this in the McDonald's drive thru. It's an endless cascade of questions, substitution requests, and price checks.

I had a similar experience. I got taken off a table once bc I wouldn’t comp a bunch of alcoholic drinks that they specifically ordered, then “didn’t like” when they were over half empty and I called them out on it. Got accused of being racist. Manager (black guy) took me off the table and told me “don’t worry, i know it’s not you. I’ll put a black server with them and they’ll get mad at her”. Sure enough 20 mins later they’re yelling at the black girl serving them, who was tougher with them than I was

The one that really grinds my gears is when people are standing in line playing on their phones and never look at the menu until it's their turn to order. Then the 5 minutes of hemming and hawing starts and completely stops the flow of customers.

This reminds me of a time a black man tried to bounce on his check and I called him out. He said he needed to run to his car and that he was going to come back to pay
Maybe his money was in the car?
quote:
Well he didn't pay and I just told him to leave.
It sounds like he didn’t pay because you kicked him out of the restaurant.
quote:
He came back later with his ID from the hospital and started putting it in my face
If the goal was to get a free meal, why would he come back to the restaurant at all?
quote:
I said now he was harassing me for trying to steal
You doubled down. If the guy was a doctor, he probably didn’t appreciate being treated like ghetto trash who was trying to get a free meal.
Look, I appreciate that you probably dealt with this a bunch of times in your job, but there might have been a legitimate reason for the guy to go to his car. This story sounds like you accused someone of stealing who had no intention of stealing. The guy understandably got mad.

That’s when the manager adds gratuity for parties of 8 or more. Anyone that pays with a card ends up having to pay it. The people paying in cash always pitch a fit and then don’t pay the gratuity saying something like “we were just gonna tip what we can afford, we were gonna give you a good tip”
had a tour bus come in during the 2:00 stay shift, about 30 people, they saw that there was gratuity on parties of 6 or more so they all sat at about 10 different tables and none left a penny, all separate checks

Word got out to the AA community and they are now blasting the establishment with negative reviews on Yelp, many saying they will never go there. Maybe this strategy to help keep out the problematic customers works!

An unfortunate side effect of all this BLM talk is it’s emboldening and making them feel even more entitled to the point they’re complaining to the media over their fried food platters.
There is something out there that is well known to all waiters/waitresses, something that has occurred for years & years and never seems to change, having to do with people of a certain color. I think most on here know exactly what I am referring to without saying it...I don't want to get banned...

Complaining about subpar food is nothing new.
20 yrs in service industry here. I can tell you his attitude was clearly frustration with the ole "Complain about the fries and temperature to get my meal comped" bit.
