If a Birmingham City Schools student walks across the stage, they will get free tuition to any in-state school they’re accepted to, according to the mayor.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woofin announced the new policy on Twitter Tuesday evening. He posted, "Starting in 2020, any Birmingham City School student that walks across the graduation stage will have the opportunity to attend any in-state two or four year school tuition free."
Woodfin later clarified, adding that the graduates will be funded to attend any public, in-state two-year or four-year school where they are accepted.

This is good. It fills a niche. The smart kids won't use it because they already have scholarships. The athletic kids won't use it because they've already been promised Chargers.

$2m funded by the city, rest from private organizations.
Love it.

You might see a lot of private school kids and kids from out of the area transfer just for their last semester to work the system.

Of course the first al.com comment. What's up with boomers and trade schools?
Someone tell this guy trade schools are included in this project.

They pay taxes to support public schools just like anybody else

They're probably the only ones that do in Birmingham proper.

I like this, there are worse uses for the money.
Hopefully a lot of the residents take advantage of it. Instead of giving a hand out they are giving a hand up.

So you are saying any kid that can somehow make it through high school in Birmingham gets a free ride to Auburn or Alabama?

He has to be accepted into the school he wants to attend. So he will still need something like a 25 ACT score or whatever they require nowadays. I would love to see some stats on ACT scores for BCS graduates.

If they are admitted by Bama or AU, yes.

A Hoover kid wouldn't make it two weeks in a Birmingham school.

I was gonna say, if they can make it a few months at Woodlawn or GW Carver, they deserve it.

Could you imagine the outrage if this was implemented at Hoover or Johns Creek Ga

The one liberal mantra I believe in is free tuition for everyone.
It's a good way to provide a good thing for poor people and their chance to get out of the ghetto, etc. It's just giving them an opportunity, if they want to achieve it.

I'm not familiar with your local schools, but I'm guessing Birmingham Schools is no different from any other typical urban district (low graduate rates, poor schools). So, I'm guessing this free tuition program is more of a good PR stunt which won't have a ton of utilization.
Hoover, I'm guessing, is a good suburban school district with really nice schools with high graduation rates. The district may go broke if it had a similar type free tuition program.

He will probably end up giving them laptop batteries instead of tuition.
