An Ural Airlines Airbus A321-100, registration VQ-BOZ performing flight U6-178 from Moscow Zhukovsky (Russia) to Simferopol (Ukraine) with 226 passengers and 7 crew, was in the initial climb through 750 feet out of Zkukovsky's runway 12 at about 06:15L (03:15Z) when the aircraft flew through a flock of birds and ingested birds into both engines (CFM56). Both engines failed, one emitting noises as if the engine spools up and down, forcing the crew to stop the climb at 750 feet and land the aircraft in a corn field about 2.77nm past the runway with gear retracted (Approximate position N55.512 E38.252). The occupants of the aircraft evacuated via slides, there were 10 injuries (including three children). The aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Another example of a miracle and when it’s not your time to go, it’s really not your time to go.

This is always my biggest fear when flying. What if a flock of dumbass birds is hanging out around the airport and decides to get in front of my plane?

None of the injuries were serious. Pilot is a hero.

I have to think that was a helluva job of piloting. Thing didn't even break up.

Damn fine job comrades.
There’s no way to prepare for dual engine failure at 750 feet. You just keep flying straight and pray for flat terrain. Good thing there was a corn field there.

The most surprising thing to me about this incident is learning there are cornfields that close to Moscow.

Good thing it was an Airbus. If it had been a Boeing the computer would have told the pilot "I got this comrade" right before pitching the plane into the ground.

That jet is a decent glider, I just did that in a sim about 45 minutes ago. Had plenty of time as long as you have a decent place to put it down.

quote:My point was I worked in Moscow for over 3 years and took many trips outside the city and never saw a cornfield.

ETA: The linked article says this:

Passengers and crew were not injured.
