The Bridge has been an underappreciated album of his. Kind of a departure in that the music was more guitar driven. Storm Front was excellent. "We didn't Start the Fire" is a very clever song as he weaves events / public figures/ cultural events in his lifetime together. It was political without being radical or taking sides per se.

It was a huge commercial success back in the day, though. #1 album & #1 hit song and a top 10 song. He promoted that album by going on a year and a half world tour.

I was in HS back then and remember other kids talking about We Didn't Start The Fire.

I hope that he will be ok.

Goodnight Saigon was always my favorite Billy Joel song. (And Allentown). Suck, we had tickets to the N.O. show as well.

Changed the post because I confused it with The Bridge that had Matter of Trust and This is The Time ...more guitar driven than other albums.

My favorite song is New York State of Mind. Never saw him in concert.

That's a great album, and yes you are right, it is under appreciated.

he was awesome when he was hungry, been mailing it in since 52nd,42nd street, whatever that was, saw him in the LSU union in the late 70s, he blew the roof off the place

He wrote a song called "Piano Man", then plays the shite out of a harmonica throughout the song. I've always loved the irony, but I've never understood why it was played ad nauseum when much better songs of his took years of even decades to get their dues.

I will say that I still remember the moment when I first heard Vienna. I was on a bus for a school trip in 1984, and a friend had The Stranger on Cassette and let me listen to it on my Walkman. While my older brother had pretty much everything Billy Joel put out on vinyl, I never listened to it. Recently the Middle Age Dad Garage Band did a cover of it (see below), with Weird Al playing accordion. The song is timeless, and was highly underrated for the longest time (pun intended).

I hate that he is suffering from this disorder, and am grateful for the stuff he wrote, and acknowledge that my life is better because of some of the Billy Joel songs I've listened to over the years.

Damn, had tickets to the Nola show.

Sad to read this. For him and his family.

We had tickets for the Aug. 8 show in East Rutherford.

Was really looking forward to seeing him and Nicks one last time.

story I heard was his first agent totally and royally screwed him out of almost everything, pretty typical in that era, owned the rights/royalties for Piano Man, could have had something to do with the airplay, Joel went on a hiatus until the contract expired and then came out swinging

Yeah it's pretty sad also because his youngest daughter is probably only eight or nine years old

Can be very treatable with a shunt to relieve pressure by letting csf out.

have a brother in law diagnosed with it too. He is declining surgery, saying that no one is messing with his brain.
That’s extremely shortsighted . In the scheme of brain surgery, putting in a VP shunt is usually not a big deal. And the prognosis is pretty positive if it’s treated.

That seems like a condition that can be managed. Doesn't sound as bad as an actual degenerative brain disease or something.

Hope he recovers well.

agreed, it's highly treatable and is sometimes one of those surgeries that seems like a miracle.

i've had multiple patients who were confused, had poor balance, festinating gait and then had the shunt procedure and were completely back to normal.

local neurologist estimates that 25% of people in memory care units don't actually have dementia, they just have NPH. their symptoms can be very similar.

No, but incredibly common. I’m sure he already has a shunt in place.
