I work at a hotel whose owner isn’t paying us during the shutdown and while it would be nice not to have to file for unemployment for a month, that’s what it’s for.

Okay, but I would argue that PTO is different since it has already been accrued. To withhold someones "already earned" pay just to be a douche bag doesn't = conservative in my view.
Granted, it isn’t how I would handle it. I value employees and believe in loyalty and would try to work something out. But if his business call is to cut them loose then that is his call.

Isn't he widely considered to be a POS?
Some of these big companies are still paying all their employees though they are closed, some aren't. I'd be curious to see the financial health differences.

They think he has billions sitting in his personal bank account. And they believe places of business keep months of payroll cash on hand. They have zero clue how cash flow works.

Landry's is privately owned, so we will never know the true numbers, but I would imagine it's pretty leveraged. Money comes in the door, most of it goes out the door in the form of debt payments and expenses, and Tilman keeps a tiny % for himself, but the revenue is such a big number that it means a big number for him.
But, I would not be surprised if they don't have a ton of cash in the company.

Most of the employee base is probably low-wage and in his mind, easily replaceable.

if you aren't generating revenue, you can't pay anyone anything. especially yourself.
and that whole pollyanna sentiment you just posted is on par with the beauty contestant wanting world peace.
I've watched more "talent" bolt for greener pastures and leave their employer- regardless of what the employer did for them, as I have seen employers shite-can dedicated employees. There is very little loyalty on either side in the modern business world.
