"Think it's gonna rain" to me was their best single.
Even High School bands were playing it at every game when I was a freshman because of the xylophone intro.
Earlier this year they were still keeping their music alive but I haven't seen much of them lately

The horns make them unique from a rock standpoint, but some of their early songs were hard (enough) rock at the time they were released.

A lot of that was driven by MTV, especially the hard rock stuff. Appetite for Destruction was released in 1987 but didn't hit until 1988 when the Sweet Child and Paradise City videos came out on MTV. Def Leppard Hysteria had a similar trajectory, released in 87 but having huge impacts in 88 with additional videos being released. Combine that with Bon Jovi New Jersey and Poison Open Up and Say Ahh, 1988 was monster year. MTV got me into music at a young age, that type specifically in 1988.
1988 was probably peak MYV at least for me. Starting in the Spring of 1988, I'd come home first from spring football practice, then from high school baseball practice and watch MTV every afternoon. Top 10 video countdown and the game show Remote Control with Ken Ober, Collin Quinn, and Kari Wurher. I think the winter/spring of 1988 had better music than the fall. Good times.

Since ringtones became a thing, Sweet Child O' Mine has been my ringtone for both of my kids. My default ringtone has always been "Communication Breakdown" by Led Zeppelin.
Simply Irresistible - saw Robert Palmer in concert at the OKC Zoo Amphitheater.
Perfect World - saw Huey Lewis and the News also at the OKC Zoo Amphitheater.
When It's Love - have seen VH multiple times.
Don't be Cruel - saw Cheap Trick way back in 1979 as the opening act for Kansas at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavillion.
Here With Me - saw REO Speedwagon several times back in the day, but I was done with them by 1988.
A couple of others from that list that I saw in concert long before those songs came out: Elton John, Pat Benatar

Keyboard undertones perhaps but all I can really hear is Eddie shredding on most of those. Definitely some riffs on "And the cradle will rock." Maybe we can meet in the middle and separate Van Hagar from Van Halen.
