My tuition is more than my mortgage, would be nice to get some of my tax money back from the state.

TOPS in itself isn’t bad.
The way it’s been executed and to some extent what it’s turned into is though.

Major problem with TOPS is that the scores are set way too low

Homeschoolers have to score at least a point higher than the public school kids, too.

Hi. I'm from the government and I'm here to help...
How about government just stay the hell out of private school?
Don't get me wrong the financial help would be nice, but come on, When has government getting involved in anything made it better. Or it ever worked out to be what they said it was.

It's not just private school tuition; apparently the funds can be used for nearly anything as long as you can justify some educational benefit. From the bill:

It costs about $12,000 per student to pay the bloated administrative and pension policies that were never fully vested up front in a public school in Louisiana

Or you could kick out the shite students out of regular public school into an alternative route and make public school viable again.

Sad but… you’re right. I know several people who do that very thing. They just don’t get married.

Private school allows people to keep their kids away from poors and undesirables

The government shouldn’t be in our schools in any capacity
You need to have to have public schools to educate the populace. Obviously they could be run better and more efficiently in general but thats another topic. But private and seperate from government influence should be an option for a variety of reasons.

how much per year is spent on an individual student in public school? heck this could save taxpayer money.
I don't know how accurate this actually is, so TIFWIW.
So, right at break even for the state average. Those few districts noted really run the cost per student up. I have a hard time believing some of them spend nearly a quarter million dollars a year per student. You can click on the link and see what that kind of money gets ya.

Didnt we already try this with student loans?
No way private schools will increase tuition after this passes
OF COURSE tuition will go up. Anytime the goverment subsidizes something, expect more cost and less quality.

I dont know if it was just their school or the whole province but she told me they gave students the option to go either a "university" route where they would take algebra 2, physics, AP courses, etc or a "college/career" route where they would take more hands on/life skill focused classes. I feel like this is a much better system for schools to adopt. Trying to push college on a bunch of kids that dont want to go and have no business going to college is kills any chance at forward momentum academically because of the resources and time youre having to spend to get those lower level kids there.
Chalmette HS does a lot of this. There is a huge workshop with top of the line tools for kids to learn woodworking and other trades. There is a huge kitchen classroom for kids to learn to be a chef and run a restaurant. There are a ton of opportunities to cross-train with Nunez Community College to learn additional trades, how to work in a plant, etc.
But those things take investment, and they take partnerships in the community, and too many public schools don't have either of those.

How would a private school know where the funds are coming from?
Private School: "We are raising our tuition by $15K per year"
Parents: "WTF!?!?! Where are we supposed to get an extra $15K a year to pay for this increase?"
Private School: Go to gator.la.gov and get your $15K there.

The logic is that it costs X dollars per student to educate them in the public system per year, so give them a chunk of money that is actually less than the cost to educate them to subsidize their private education. I think any family regardless of income can get like $7500
The problem is this won't actually result in many public kids moving to private school.
It will simply result in the state having to pay some tuition for a kid, where currently they pay no tuition for that kid.

Do you know how many people got a free college degree in Louisiana then jumped ship to never pay state or local taxes again?
The rules initially were soft which allowed droves of students to flunk out after semester 1 or 2. The initial TOPS minimum score was a 17. It was a joke and they paid dearly for it.
