Bill allowing Utah drivers to run red lights passes House

quote:
A bill that would allow Utah drivers to run red lights during "extremely low" traffic will move onto the state Senate after it passed through the House on Monday.
quote:
House Bill 151, if passed, would allow a driver to head through a red light if they are waiting on a highway with a speed limit of 55 miles per hour, or lower, during a time of "extremely low traffic levels." Drivers must stop for at the light for at least 90 seconds before they are allowed to proceed if it is still red, the bill's text specifies.
The driver must also determine there are no other vehicles at or near the intersection that would be unsafe, if there are no pedestrians attempting to cross at or near the intersections and no other safety concerns.

I actually love this bill. If no one is at a light, why should I have to wait. Of course it will be abused and wrecks will ensue, but because it’s in Utah it has a chance.
In LA, it would literally be anarchy

Do they not have sensors?

Common sense. We need to do this every where. Sitting needlessly at red lights causes a lot of wasted fuel and time.

You should get a job in the media, you'll fit in well.

Yea
This is the main concern with this

Are the study results quoted?

Kind of dumb to make it 90 seconds. Just make it so they can treat it like a stop sign if they don't want drivers waiting for no reason.

I do this now. Always have. I'll wait 30 seconds at a deserted light, after that ease on through.

Endorsed. Ever sit at a light on Preston Road early in the AM and just say F It? Boy I have.

People would die and Gordon would get richer.

Obviously low level of traffic would not be during school hours. What a misleading picture.

They must not have hoods in Utah...

Kind of dumb to make it 90 seconds.

That vague clause can get anyone out of a ticket

I mean, I actually really like the idea of this bill.

Or just stop look and make sure there are no cops prior to 90 seconds.
I somewhat agree, but most dumb fricks are too stupid to apply any sort of critical thinking skills on the road. Red=stop Green=go and that’s as deep as it gets. It reminds me of this. They could never apply all of these stipulations correctly.

I used to do this at Burbank and Lee all the time... that light would take forever, so if it was red and no one was coming from any direction, I just went.
ETA: A better solution though would be to adjust the light programming so that it's flashing yellow in the primary travel direction and flashing red in the secondary direction during low volume times.

I wish we had that here
The other day there was a scary native that kept getting closer to my truck and I wanted to run the light
