I was happy to work with Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer on this modification, after we both heard from residents who found the old process too burdensome. The new ordinance accomplishes several goals: Moves the bike registration process from NOPD to the Department of Safety and Permits; Allows registration to be administered at “satellite” locations like bike shops; Removes the mandatory requirement; Provides that a sticker will be added to the bike/vehicle; Increases the registration fee from $3 to $5; Sets an effective date of Jan. 1, 2019 The change will benefit the bike-riding community by preventing cyclists from being ticketed for lack of registration, and will make the registration process easier for residents.
