So what is the timing on this initial front? New Years Eve? New Years Day? Are any of the models showing some alignment with the timing. I’m going to be in New Braunfels for New Years Eve and I’m checking out and driving back to BR on New Years Day. In short, I don’t want to come back to icy roads and busted pipes.

Must be the huge ridge out west to compensate. Is that the PNA?

But you’re right... really weird.

Can we also talk about the warm and dry La Niña that we’ve experienced so far?

I was just about to post if anyone was looking at windchills? From the looks of it wind chill will be -5 to -10 degrees when the coldest hits in South Louisiana.

The media will make a big deal but it looks like this is only a 12-18 hour event.

Hopefully, this will knock down the fricking mosquitos this summer.

Unfortunately, it won't.

quote:

According to the News Star, mosquito eggs actually will not die in below freezing weather. Despite dropping below freezing for the past several days, Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District Interim Director Shannon Rider said area residents shouldn’t expect fewer mosquitoes during the spring and summer months.

“Unfortunately, it probably really won’t do anything to the mosquito population,” Rider said. “The most it will do is prolong the mosquito eggs hatching by making them inactive for a little longer.”

Rider said a common public misconception is that the cold weather would reduce the mosquito population by killing the mosquito eggs, which are generally laid by adult mosquitoes the previous year. Rider said freezing conditions don’t kill the eggs, which could remain dormant for two years.

I hate to be that guy, but does anyone have any quick and dirty recommendations for avoiding busted pipes for those of us with pier and beam foundations? It seems like letting the water drip likely may not be enough this time.

Ideally, something I could do this coming Saturday.

If you're working outside, it's the best way to go. Way better than long Johns plus you can take them off easily when you go inside.

If the forecast verifies I may cut off my water at the shutoff valve and drain my pipes.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I realize you need to take the winter in it’s entirety but the predictions of a very moderate/above average temp winter for the southeast appear to be just a bit off at least in the early going.
