Big cities in the United States that you almost never hear about

Or cities that almost seem forgotten and are never in the national spotlight. I remember people were really surprised to find out Corpus Christi was as populated as it is when they were experiencing the hurricanes last year. These are other cities might have a large metro population, but you almost never hear of them:
El Paso- 900k metro (2.7M if you include Juárez)
Rochester, NY- 1.2M metro
Milwaukee- 1.6M metro
Cape Coral/Ft. Myers, FL- 800k metro
Spokane, WA- 600k metro
San Antonio- 2.5M metro (documented)
New Haven, CT (where I got my undergrad) 900k metro
I know these aren’t really huge cities but still bigger than you’d think given their exposure...Any others to contribute?

Seems like half the cities in Texas have 250k min.
San Jose, CA to answer your question, though.

People from San Antonio love talking about it and how large it is.

They’re pricing a lot of middle-class folks out with those real-estate prices though.

Spokane is not a bad place. I've been once and wouldn't mind getting back.
How about Wichita, Kansas? Population about 400K.
Or Albuquerque...about 600K

And northwest arkansas (springdale, fayetteville, rodgers) metro near 600,000.
I know not big, but heck of a lot bigger than 99% of people think
The drive between those cities is now like one big city now.

These aren't really big cities. Baton Rouge's metro is 830k.
