Other than the Cross bikes, a decent hybrid would be like a Cannondale CX 2 (under 1k)which comes with Deore group which is a good for that price range and a front shock or Cannondale's Bad Boy. It's an urban but you could change out the tires and it's rigid(no shock).

Specialized has a newer line of "adventure" bikes. The Diverge which is similar to a Cross bike or the Awol that has a steel frame which is a nicer ride than aluminum.

I've been riding a Trek Hybrid for about 2 years now and love it. Handles bumps and cracks in the streets and flys when I'm up on the levee. Not as fast a road bike, but also have never had a flat. Which I can't say the same for my dad who has a Cannondale road bike, seems to get a flat every couple months.

Also I'd suggest getting a Cat Eye for your bike, helps track speed, distance, and time. Glad I bought it, so I don't have to take out my phone while riding.

A hybrid would probably be best. I bought a Trek FX 7.2 for around $500.00 last summer and have been really enjoying it. The FX line goes up to the 7.5 for around $1000.00 if you really want to spend that much money. I would also consider the cost of gear.

Excellent. Very solid feedback in here. My next step is to hit up a couple of local shops and try the different styles now that I've narrowed it down a bit. Also, thanks for the heads up on the gear bit.

I have had a Specialized bicycle for many years (guessing at least 30 years).

I don't ride as much as I used to but it has lasted what seems like forever. It also has never been stored outside.

Nice try.

You've had a poors attack.

You got a paper route.

I've never gotten a flat. I keep pretty tough tires on for training and will swap to "faster" tires that may be more prone to flats only for a race. One of the reasons I think I never have gotten a flat is that I always make sure my tires are inflated properly and watch out for potholes. You can ride bigger tires on a road bike (like the 28mm I have on my CX bike) and you will have a hard time getting a flat. Wouldn't rule them out because of that for sure.

I'd suggest a 29'er. You can pump the tires up to max psi, lock in the front fork, and put some clips on the pedals and have a nice road setup. Drop the pressure down and go hopping off road.

I'm another big fan of bikes direct. 2 bikes ordered from them with no issues.

This is what my other bike is. I really like it. Felt seems to get you some decent quality components for a few hundred less than their competitors. At least at the shop I use. Don't know anything about their intro bikes in that price range though.

I feel like I am the same person as the OP. I had to switch to biking over running for exercises cause I hurt my knee.

I also bought a Trek Hybrid 2 years ago like other people in this thread. I don't do any competitive rides, but I bike a decent amount when its not cold. If you plan on biking really long distances then get a road bike, but if you are like me and just looking for an alternative way to workout then I would go with the hybrid. Its cheaper, but it is still a nice bike. You don't have to worry about taking it on older, shitily paved roads (like the ones around where I live, and alot of other roads in BR), but the tires are still thin enough to pick up some speed.
