The Birmingham Police Department released a video Monday showing the tasing and arrest of Minor High School's band director last week.

Juandalynn Givan, the attorney for band director Johnny Mims, said the bands were taking part in fifth quarter. This is a time after the game when some high schools and historically Black colleges and universities will have their bands battle to see who is better.

"As a safety precaution, fifth quarter performances are not allowed," Birmingham City Schools said in a statement Wednesday.

The footage starts 18 minutes after the game ends and shows officers walking onto the bleachers to where the band is playing.

Multiple officers can be heard yelling at the instructor, Johnny Mims, to leave and that they are going to contact the school. He responded by telling them that it was the last song.

The field lights go off, and the director ends the song. A sergeant says to place him in handcuffs.

The crowd starts yelling as the body cam footage moves to show an altercation between officers and the band director. It is unclear who started the altercation.

When society demonizes a profession, all the good ones get out a leave a void for the shitbags that have no business carrying a gun, much less with a badge.

Good job, society.

Few things:

I know the band director indirectly and have been around him before. He’s an interesting person to say the least. He also was removed from a previous school for angry outbursts and breaking furniture during class while berating the students. While I personally think coaches and directors losing their cool can sometimes be motivating, I can see how others would be fearful to have their kids around someone like that. And if he responded angrily and out of control towards police, I would expect there to be a vigilant response.

The band was playing for 18 minutes at night in one of the most dangerous parts of BHam after a rivalry football game. Police needed to clear the area for safety reasons. Just abide and tell your band it’s time to go home.

Maybe I don’t understand band but the visual of a director hyping them up like Ray Lewis in the Ravens locker room cracks me up.

How do you know it’s a law?

This seems pretty fricking ludicrous to me- “not allowed”? Does that map to some actual law, or just a police department policy (very dangerous precedent in today’s day and age ). Of all things, bands and music (even in a somewhat competitive scenario like 5th quarter) are one of those things that should bring people together.

Maybe they can inform us why it is illegal for a high school band to play after the game is over.

Did you watch the video? The band director was completely out of line and resisted arrest. He deserves just as much blame, if not more, than the cops in this instance
