Right, I'm just not willing to credit religion with the evolving consensus on morality.
I could easily argue that as technology improved we had less and less reasons to kill people.

I can honestly see your religion/morality argument. However, even if I bought into that and agreed it wouldn't bring me much closer to a belief in a God/afterlife though. It doesn't necessarily have to be true to make a positive impact.

The bible tells us that when we are dead, we are not in any kind of pain or suffering, in fact "the dead know nothing at all" (Ecc. 9:5). Jesus likend death with deep sleep in his teachings, like when Lazarus died(John 11:11-14).
Think of it this way, when your dog dies, what will be the state of that dog? He will just be dead correct? Like Gen 3:19 says we will just return to dust just like our animals. The bible even tells us that we have no advantage over animals(Ecc. 3:19)
So when we die we are in a sleeping state. We will not be going to heaven or hell, we will be conscious of nothing. We will be waiting for the resurrection( John 5:28, 29)

I never said all but this world is full of evil and suffering. I see a much grander magnificent place after death where there is zero evil and suffering.
For you, this earth is as good as it gets and this is a cruel place. And that is a very sad out look you have.
