re: Best way to get yardage for your iron shots?

A couple of things - someone mentioned trackman - that wil get you dialed in faster than anything else out there right now - many pros still use the GC2 - you have to use the little stickers on your clubs with GC2(use to anyway). GC2 and trackman will be within a yard of each other. Trackman I believe can give a little more data.
What I do - start with your 56 and work your way back - 5 shots each club - get good distances on the range and chart the hits.
Take that data to the course and start working your numbers.

This is the MSB we don't use short irons because we drive all the greens with a putter. I know some guys who hit a PW 165 yds. But they all suck. I wouldn't want to hit one that far. I would have way too much of a gap at the bottom. It amazes me on the club selection in some peoples bag. My dad carries a 3 iron and a 3 wood that he NEVER uses because he "might" need them.

My PW is 48 degrees - no way it is going the yardages y'all are taking about!!!

hit more balls than 5 times a year. < == hopeless
twice a week at least. driving range every week.
lessons from a pro at the beginning of July after you were playing a lot but with time to apply the rest of the summer.
if you only play once a month, there is no way to learn the game.

quote:I definitely don't suck, but the gap is becoming a big problem as I try to take the next step in my game. I literally never hit my 3 wood. I've started to hit my 3 iron off the tee quite often after almost never hitting it in my life. Found that I hit a perfect little draw with it(I work the ball left to right with every other club I hit) and almost can't hit a bad shot with it. I don't know why, and I'll probably change something one day and lose it. But right now, the way I'm hitting it, I'm gonna let it ride.

You hit a PW left to right 150 and you don't suck? Impressive.

Me thinking I don't suck might be reletive. I'm fine with an 84. Anything more and I'm probably mad. Anything below and I'm pretty happy. And it's pretty obvious that I'm talking about long irons and my driver when talking about left to right. I don't fade a PW like I would my driver...

That's a cool chart. Thanks for posting. I'm getting a lesson at U Club Friday (weather permitting) and I'm hoping they video my swing and determine swing speed. I see a column on there that's a pretty fair representation of my distances though..

I'm pretty close to the chart around the 110 and 113 lines.
I don't carry a 3 wood or a hybrid. I have an 18° 5 wood that I hit about 240 off the tee.
I have these wedges...
52° that I hit about 115 yds
56° that I hit about 100 yds
60° that I hit about 85 yds
I usually use my 56° for most shots inside of 65 yds because I practice with it the most at those shorter distances.

Who are you getting the lesson with at the Uclub?

Andrew Lanahan. I've never met him but he was recommended by someone I know.

Going to the range is less accurate due to the fact range balls typically do not fly the same distances as balls you will use on the course. You can get an idea by hitting on the range, but the range is mostly to work on your swing and check ball flight patterns rather than to gauge distances.
True, but you can still gauge distances well enough.
Per GolfWRX: "We have tested probably every range ball at higher end courses using the TrackMan ball flight monitor... In general these balls will spin MORE than high end balls and carry 5-10% shorter...they are range balls after all...keep 'em in the range. The Srixon range balls were actually the worst in terms of distance loss (up to 15%) and variability in ball flight."
Go to a range and dial in distances to certain targets, and find out what your gaps are (typically 10-12 yards between irons), and chart it out. If you hit your 7 iron 150 with range balls, you can do the same with a 8 iron with a better ball.

Definitely go to a driving range
I would not advise relying on that. Range balls do not react like regular game balls.
I would say that the only real way is thru regular play. Sure you have to suffer thru many rounds where you choose the wrong club, but eventually you'll know what you really hit.

So I have been playing golf my entire life, never taken a lesson (big golfing family, learned from granddad).
I normally shoot between 95-105. The best part of my game is chipping, flop shots, and on good days I'm putting really well.
Everything else is dog shite. I really want to improve my game this year and so I signed up for a lesson at Golftec here in Denver.
1. About how many lessons do I need?
2. Someone recommended I take a lesson about every 2-3 weeks and practice in between. Thoughts?
3. Any books or anything I should get?
I don't want to walk into this place and get scammed into taking a million lessons.
TIA

Lessons can make golf less fun IMO
I've taken a few and come to realize I'm not serious enough about practicing to ever take it too seriously
Buy the book "hogans five lessons"
It's very simple to understand and it will help most people with some important fundamentals

I think you're underestimating how bad I am

If you are able to legitimately break 100, you can help yourself get better
Lessons help, but I always leave them with too many damn things to think about
I'd rather learn at a slower pace

1. I think you should be able to learn basic alignment, grip, posture, and how to practice with 3-4 lessons.
2. Definitely the key is to practice regularly. Even good golfers get rust from not playing regularly.
3. The only thing you need is range balls and time
