For what it's worth, I had the same option basically, after graduating med school, and asked for them to invest the money. I kept the Avalon hand me down I had since first year (2003), and just bought a new car now (2nd year in practice). The money they invested has nearly 3x'ed.

Just my 2 cents.. Gluck w med school.

Hijack- need a place to live while in bed school? My parents have a house to rent that's 5 minutes from the med school.

Appreciate the offer, but we have a place in Bossier.

For mine they have a 10 year 120k mile warranty on the turbo drive and to not void that warranty you have to have proof of scheduled maintenance

For yours? Did you buy brand new or used? You may have already answered this. Sounds like you bought used. Reason I say that is if IIRC, you got a longer warranty for used than if you bought new. I bought new with extended warranty and don't recall the same stipulation.

Does proof of scheduled maintenance mean you have to have every little thing done or just proof that you're doing the big/most important things?

ETA: All the maintenance costs aside, do you like the car? Why a diesel? Do you drive for work?

If gas mileage is a big deal then just get a Prius and fill up your 10 gal tank once a month. Lots of room in them

We bought new. The regular warranty was 36k miles but they were having a lot of turbo failure problems apparently. We got a letter in the mail saying the turbo drive warranty would be extended to 120k.

It is my wife's car but we take it everywhere. Put 40k on it in 1.5 years. We really like the car. It is fun to drive because of the torque of a Diesel engine. With diesel prices the same as gas now a days we are really getting our money out of it. We needed a reliable car and we heard good things about Volkswagen Diesel engines. My wife put 250k on her last car

Camry SE - Better looking PLUS dependability, great gas mileage, and a few bells and whistles.

Better looking than what? The new Camry is just as boring as you can get. I have no idea who OK'ed the marketing tagline of BOLD, but they should be fired. They are comfortable and well appointed. But they are nothing near bold.

ETA: As for answering the OP, I'd get an Accord EX-L V6 sedan and get them to put the rims from the Sport trim on it.

I'd get a nice Jetta. I can't ever drive a Camry again, and I feel like I'd feel the same about an Accord in short order.

Top rankings for initial quality and long term durability:

LINK

Chevy Malibu beat the Toyota Camry
BMW 2 series beat the Acura ILX

LINK

Buick Lacrosse beat the Toyota Avalon
Chevy Malibu beat the Toyota Camry
Toyota Corolla beat the Honda Civic

Honda Accord didn't make top 3 for either ranking.

Fwiw, they're coming out with a mid model refresh for the 2016's in the next month or 2 that should have larger/ better rims

I agree. Get a $10k used car or keep what you got and invest the rest.

Right, because the Jetta is such a sportier drive than the Japanese cars Do you ever get tired of pimping German cars exclusively? Better yet, have you driven the new models of any of the three?

ETA: Not to mention that the Jetta is a smaller car than either of the other two.

Spend $10 k on a used car and pocket $20k. Son just graduated law school and his 12 year old dodge is shot. I told him I'd spend $10k and he asked if he could spend $5000 and put the other $5000 towards his Roth for this year - I about cried I was so proud

Buy a used Subaru for 15k, and put 15k in VTSMX. Add a little cash to it each month. By the time your car dies, you will have enough to repeat the process. Thus, never having a car payment.

ETA:
Didn't see where you will be in med school. You will probably be in an urban area. Just live close to the hospital, and invest the 30k like the guy above said.

Altima SL with leather and all that for around $25,000.

You then have $5,000 for rims and speakers and whatever else you kids are ruining cars with these days.

I'm 100% Camry, but I think it and the Accord are interchangeable. Just drive both and pick which one your like better. If buying new, opt for the HondaCare, I've used it on several occasions.

I would also look into some crossovers, especially if you will ever be having people in the car with you. They are super nice!

You can get a Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab SR-5 for $31,000 (use the build tool on Toyota.com). I know that 31>30...but they are great vehicles that hold their value well.
