Best Site to Buy Domain Names?

This thread was ignored on the MT, so I come to my OT brethren.
I thought some of you small business owners may have some advice. I’m really only familiar with GoDaddy due to their marketing, but don’t know much about any of these different, 3rd party domain selling sites.
Is there anything I should look for save for the best price? Not ready to start building the site, but want to make sure I have the domain I want when I do. TIA

We used Wix
I didn’t have any part of creating it but we have had no issues

I registered my domain name when I built my website through Wix.

If you are only buying the name it really does not matter where you buy it from. GoDaddy would be fine.

i always buy them via my hosting site (Dream Host)

Google Domains will probably be your cheapest option. You can always transfer to your hosting provider later.
But, some hosting providers will give you a free domain registration for a year.

You need to also consider where you will build and host the site. There may be a waiting period to transfer it over from GoDaddy to something like Squarespace.
So first decide where it will live and how it will be built. Then if you can buy the domain there things will be easier for you.

This is the tentative plan. How long may it take?
Thanks to everyone who answered.

I've used GoDaddy for years. Great customer service. I have a lot of domains with them.

Always separate them..domain name at GoDaddy or something similar. Website at whatever webhost like Wix. If webhost ever gives your problems, you can just point the DNS records to another company.

Look for a godaddy promo code by searching google.

Buying a domain from any number of places, what are you actually buying. If the domain name isn’t already used why can’t you just set it up yourself. Who are you buying it from? What does godaddy or wix actually do that you are paying for? Explain it to me like I’m a 3rd grader

The actual domain like tigerdroppings.com

This is like saying that phone number 800-big-ones is available and just start using it.
You can't.
It must be bought and registered so when someone calls it, the phone companies know who owns it and where to route that call.
Domains work in a similar fashion so when someone goes to a domain, they know where to forward that traffic to in order to reach your website.

You are buying it from whoever your registrar is (network solutions, hover, godaddy, enom, etc). The are setup to sell toplevel domains through [link=(ICANN)]https://www.icann.org/[/link] who controls and maintains most domains databases.
When you setup a website through godaddy or wix, they give you a subdomain to access the site. something like yoursite22.wix.com. Once you buy a normal domain you point it to your webhost and everyone knows to route that domain traffic to your new website.
