Two of my kids have had bad allergy related asthma this year and doctor said a nebulizer for treatment on particularly bad days (and before sports) would be helpful.

Anyone here have a recommendation of one? Or know a good brand? Tons of options on Amazon, none really stick out from reviews/popularity.

TIA!

Not a lot of difference between brands so might as well go with the cute one. Mountain Medical has a blue dog.

There are also nebulizer masks that look like frogs, fish, etc.

IMO none of them stick out because they're all basically the same device designed to the same specifications to do the same thing. We've had two for about 12 years. I think one came from Walgreens and the other came from Amazon. Knowing what I know now, the only thing I might've done different is looking for one on Amazon that came with spare accessories like the cup that you squirt the Albuterol into because I lost one along the way.

Agreed, they all seem what and what. The biggest issue we had was the nebulizer mask. The first one we had had the medication bowl mounted in a location that wasn't ideal for a 3 year old.

Ordered a better mask and haven't had an issue. Also depending on his kids age, the hand held mask may even be better.

We used the one that looked like a race car.

I think they are all the same. It connects to a tube, which connects to the capsule where you put the fluid, which connects to a mask. Get the one that looks easiest to clean. I don't know if they make dishwasher safe tubes, capsule, and mask, but that would be what I would look for.

Thanks everyone!

They're past the toddler stage, 7 and 9. I am more worried about them standing still with the tube in their mouth for 5 minutes. Would a mask with straps be easier?

We have had the same one since 2019. Still works, in fact I used it this weekend. Bought it from a local medical supply store. We have a handheld mask that looks like a dinosaur.

Only advice is if you're buying from someplace that takes insurance, ask for the cash price. Cash was less than half of the insurance copay for me.

As a dad who had a kid with breathing issues for years, get multiple masks. They are cheap and help make sure the dose is administered.

Ask about a spacer mask with inhalers if they are 7 and 9yo.

We got a turtle one. Works well. My 2yo actually needed it the other day for croup.

Luckily for us we only really need saline. Sounds like you need albuterol or some other steroid.

None of my business, but why not use an inhaler? I'm incredibly ignorant on asthma so forgive me.

I would not recommend nebulizing your child. The state frowns upon such behaviors.

These are the children's size at walgreens. Apparently as a 5'3" adult this is till what I needed.

I much preferred the mask because I could then do the treatment hands free while watching tv or whatever.

Eta- for emergencies nebulizer tubing and fish tank air tubing are the same size. I had an emergency near Christmas in the country but the hardware store had fish tubing when my tubing crimped and made a hole.

Have those. Nebulizers work better. They've used them in the doctors office and it's way more effective.

9 year old is ok, 7 still messes it up. We end up wasting a lot of albuterol.

And personally speaking, I had one growing up (poor kids got my asthma genetics) and it was a game changer for me.

We do inhalers, nebulizers with albuterol are a step above.

best of luck. The only complaint I've got is my kids won't sit there with the mask, so I'm forced to hold the hose near their snot faces for the duration.

I also take a hit or two

I often take a hit or two of their inhalers

I haven't had asthma since high school really, but it still feels great Started off with me showing them how to do it and then I was like "shite, I like that".

We use this one for our toddler. It is quiet and we can sneak in his nursery while he is sleeping and he has no idea he is even doing a breathing treatment.

Now, these are not as strong as the old school nebulizer machines with the tube. Those work great for kid or adult that can sit still.

May want to ask your doc if insurance will cover either of these. Also, ask your doc about budesonide, which is a daily maintenance medicine for asthma. Albuterol is more for someone who is currently sick.

All nebulizers are the same....

The cute little doggie thing is the air compressor...

I don't know how old your kids are, but it they're old enough to do a metered does inhaler, MDI with a spacer, use that. Use the nebulizer for severe cases...

The drug is the most important thing.

That's a steroid that helps with inflammatory issues, and can be given with albuterol..

Side note: You use something designed for dogs on your child?

Seriously, that's an ultrasonic nebulizer, it works on sound waves, it actually give out smaller aerosolized particles than a standard nebulizer.
