Just for reference, my wife just traded in her 2020 Ford Explorer XLT with 20k miles; they gave her $29k for it. They currently have it on the lot for $37.5k.

In a normal market the best value is getting a used American SUV. Their resale generally sucks the first 10 years so you can pick up some NICE vehicles for way less than buying new. Computers have made cars extremely reliable and I think the best deals are the 10 year old SUV or the 100k miles SUV, for some reason hitting one of those milestones turns off dealers, banks and buyers and makes for a very good value proposition.

We got an Atlas a couple years ago and it was sub 30. Great car for the price.
You can still get them for under $30, it just may not have all the options. I found a certified 2018 SEL Premium with 32K miles for under $35 back in February. The 2018 and 2019 come with a 6yr/72k factory warranty, which extends to 7/84 if it's CPO. They changed the warranty in 2020 to 4/50.
I love the Atlas- fun to drive, tons of room in the middle row with the adjustable seats (move back for more leg room). Biggest knock is 17 city/23-24 highway and a 19.5 gallon tank.
The SEL Premium is the only trim level that comes with the Fender Sound System, which was well worth the price of upgrade.
Can't compare it to any others- the wife liked the Atlas when she drove a friends, so that's the only thing we seriously looked at.

Just bought a CX-5 for my Wife a month ago, she wanted a Rav4, but I talked her into at least test driving the CX-5, and she loved it way more than the Rav4 and CRV.
My wife went from an Audi Q3 (lease) to the Mazda CX-5 (all cash purchase), and while it was an issue to get her just to test drive it, shortly after she was convinced that she liked it and felt a similar operational and aesthetic appeal.
So far she's.....I've...only had one regret, the color that she picked (charcoal, always shows dirt and wants me to wash it every weekend)

We bought my wife a Honda CR-V about 6 months ago and she loves it.

Maybe a low option Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Use to could find great deals on 2yr used.
Don't fricking do it. There is a reason you can find great deals on barely used Jeep Grand Cherokees. It probably already had to have a new transmission and all of the electronics work 50% of the time.

the OP-
You say V6 is fine. Does that mean you will consider going up to a V6 engine if it is an option? Are you looking for a V6 engine or will a turbo four-cylinder suffice?
Do you need it to tow anything beyond a tiny trailer?
Do you care about things like AWD or four-wheel drive?
I only meant I don't need a V8. Not towing anything heavy. 4 wheel drive is cool but not necessary.

Good luck finding many with less than 80k miles for less than 30k.

My girlfriend has one. She loves it. I like it too, honestly. Just curious how the OT compares the market.

I had never heard of this one. Just Googled it. Thanks.

It depends on how big of an "SUV" you need. To get it near the $30k mark, you're moreso looking @ a compact SUV.
I love the way the Mazda CX-30 Turbo looks. Its not the biggest SUV, but has 250 HP and is zippy AF

Family got a 2015 Honda CRV. 72K mi and the starter went out. Very well known problem. Other than that, runs great.

Midsize SUV < 30K doesn’t even compute. Have you seen used car prices the last 12 months?? You aren’t getting a mid-sized SUV new under 30k with any kind of options or legroom to speak of.
All of these price increases are going to hit new cars pretty soon also for MY ‘22.

People who still believe this haven’t paid any attention to Grand Cherokee’s in the last 20 years. My ‘06 is still rocking with 165k miles- no maintenance to speak of, except that one time I had to change the brake pads. It’s rarely driven these days, but still very reliable.
ETA: Jeep’s also offering free maintenance for 3 years right now, along with 0% for 72 months
