We had a 1978 Chevy conversion van. When I was 14, we went on a 3-week family vacation out west…Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Disneyland…pulling a pop-up camper. It was equal parts Beverly Hillbillies and National Lampoon Vacation. We hiked to Phantom Ranch and back and swam in the Colorado River. Cold AF in July.
I also had a lot of fun in that van after I started driving, IYKWIM.

When I was a kid in the 70's my parents had one of these tanks, exact same year model, exact same color.
On long trips from Texas to Georgia to visit family my dad would put the back seats down and slide a twin mattress in there for me and my brother to rest/sleep on as we traveled. My memories are of laying on that mattress, feeling the rhythm of the road beneath me and listening to Top 40 AM radio the whole way while while my parents smoked like chimneys up front.
Thing was so long that Mom would make a joke when we crossed a state line that they were in one state while my brother and I were still in the other state.
Then they bought this during the energy crisis. Sucker had no room at all.

We bought a full sized ford woodie station wagon for a cross country trip to California (yes, just like the Griswolds). I was about 12 years old and spent much of the trip, especially the drive across the plains, asleep in the far back…laying flat, often with my legs hanging out the open back window.
I would’ve been killed instantly in pretty much any accident, but it was the late 80s.

Rode in the back rear facing seat from Paducah KY to Myrtle Beach, SC and back in 67!
Somewhere down around Dalton, GA we stopped at a roadside rest stop to eat lunch and somehow I stepped in a pile of human excrement while my brothers and I were exploring as my parents cleaned up. Unfortunately this was not discovered until we were back underway and the mysterious odor source could not be readily identified.

We had a station wagon for about 15 years. 6 kids, a dog. We called them grocery getters.

Trips to the redneck riviera in a van were a rite of passage in the 80s.

I wrecked my mom's station wagon on ice. Because bodied were steel, my dad found a part at a junk yard for $25 and we repaired it ourselves.

One evening, sitting with the in laws talking. Sister in Law says she envied me and my life as a military brat. “You went to places and met people I only dreamed about.”
I replied “I envied you. Started school in the first grade and graduated with some of those people. Most of the kids I met, vanished out of the rear window of family station wagon. Waving good bye until out of sight.”
Two different worlds.

Still have one, still making memories. We have 6 kids, I use it as our tow-behind with the RV and as a backup/fun car. They love riding in the back going through the mountains.
It’s the ultimate swiss army knife of vehicles and loaded with still functional options. Hauls 8, comfortable, easy to repair, tow package, air leveling rear, heated seats, glass roof. Kind of quick and easy to modify. This one has intake, headers, exhaust, rear airlift, suspension upgrades/bilsteins.
Plus, its pretty funny to roll up in it with all the kids and a stroller strapped to the top in fancy places where it may not exactly fit in.

My dad had the CB for that trip and many others. He worked in insurance as a fire/arson investigator so his handle was "Ashkicker".

No memories of either because we didn’t have either of these vehicles

The eighties. My father's station wagon.
Loading all the neighborhood kids and BMX bikes we could fit on the weekend. Then a road trip to the local BMX races.
A trip to South Padre Island with the family in the same station wagon during Spring Break. Caught my first Bull Shark with my father by my side.
Great times!!!
