Frequent. 50% travel, flying every other week.

Ask an airline pilot.

Seriously. They need it more than most any of us.

I have Filson luggage, it's good and when I'm checking in at nice hotel, I'm never embarrassed but I don't know that it's the "best".

If you try to push the size limit, be aware that American Airlines will make you check it (even if the bag is approved). frickers.

Filson or Hartman.

Avoid leather. It looks good and then gets beat up and scratched. Plus, it's heavy.

Briggs & Riley or Tumi Alpha II. Briggs comes with a lifetime warranty.

Best bang for the buck? Victorinox. Comes with a 10 year warranty.

And go with 4 wheels.

after talking to a few flight crew folks in airports, I bought a travelpro and have no regrets at all...it has been with me since the late '90s and has been through hell and I have not had one single problem with it...

fwiw, the two things to look out for are quality wheels and quality zippers....wheels need to have good ball bearings and be damn near indestructible....

also make sure it is made such that it can be drug over curbs thousands of times without picking it up off the ground without being damaged...

If you fly often and have an appreciation for the nicer things, I'd recommend TUMI.

Unless you are looking for some sort of status symbol, find a $50 suitcase you like, and buy one every 5 years. You'll go 60 years before you spend what you'll spend in the bags people will post in this thread.

I travel a lot and am usually all for spending extra for that wow factor, but I just could never justify it for a bag I put clothes in to get to where I need to go. Not knocking it.

I'm probably going to buy a carry on soon, but I don't roll bags. I carry my checked bag and it has wheels. Laptop bag over the shoulder, luggage in hand. Thinking about something like this.

Or this.

Or this.

Agree

I own a decent set of Samsonsite and have a lot of miles on them. It is durable enough to last but economical enough that it can be replaced if it gets damaged without being pissed.

Briggs and Riley has treated me well. I travel a lot for my profession and travelpro seems to be the favorite among coworkers.
