Best Affordable Cell Phone Plans?

For anyone who has had to switch lately, any recommendations?

I'll be honest, I haven't shopped around for cell phone plans for years. I was with Consumer Cellular on a family plan with my parents. It was really nice as my dad only paid $35/month for unlimited calls and data and it was only $15/month for additional lines for my mom and I. So I would just give him the $15/month.

Long story short, my dad recently passed away. With him passing away and us removing his line, Consumer Cellular wanted to increase the rate to $50/month for the main line and then $15/month for the secondary line. Sadly, my brother-in-law's dad also recently passed away. They were able to get my mom on their family plan (since they removed their dad) for a dirt cheap rate, either $10 or $15/month.

My brother-in-law either can't or is unwilling to let me join their family plan (probably just maxed out on lines, but I also think he doesn't want the hassle of me having to pay him every month). And we all know cell phone carriers kind of punish people who are single and don't have family plans. Any recommendations on carriers?

Being 42 I can't stay on Consumer Cellular as I think you have to be 50+. Even if I could, I know there are better deals than $50/month. Looking at Mint, Boost Mobile or T-Mobile. Any recommendations? Any thoughts on the overall service of these or is there any others I should consider?

Nothing about that. Why pay for more than I have to?

Up until 2018 I did have my own plan with AT&T. They were screwing me over at like $85/month and my dad was like "we could add you on our family plan for $15/month", so I took it.

I gave them the money. I'm not going to apologize for getting the same service (As I know Consumer Cellular uses the AT&T network) and saving $70/month.

I just haven't had to look in awhile, so I don't know which ones are good, which ones are bad, or if they are all about the same now.

That's not bad. Is that locked in as part of a contract or just month to month? Is that unlimited data? I looked at my current usage and it's about 18GB so in theory I could do a 20GB or less plan, but I just don't like worrying about going over, so I'd rather do unlimited.

I would also be bringing over my phone. It's an iPhone 15 and I bought it directly from Apple so it's also unlocked (I tried buying an iPhone 15 from Walmart, that was a nightmare as it was supposed to be unlocked and of course when it arrives it's locked, lesson learned there).

It's easy to carry your number and switch services these days... I use mint because verizion was high as a cat's arse, the introductory period was like 15/mo per line. It's now 25/mo per line, which is still cheaper than when we quit verizon.

Ask people in your area... some services work better in some places than others.

I use mint.
Was the cheapest that also offers international plans.
Actually works good, coming up on 2 years with them.

That's how AT&T was for me, I think at the end I was at close to $100/month for 1 line.

Mint has been the one I've really been looking at. The one thing I noticed, on the website it looks like you have to prepay? Is that accurate? So like if I did a 12 month plan at $25/month, do I pay the $300 up front? That's what the website makes it sound like.

The other question I would have, how does the service work when you are traveling or in a rural area? One thing I used to remember with the cheaper services, the reception was terrible in rural areas. Is that still the case or has that hopefully changed?

I pay in 3mo installments... but I did see where you save more if you buy a year.

The selling point for me when I switched was that even paying 3mo up front, it was STILL cheaper than a month of verizon. My daughter had used the service a while before we did, we saw she was pleased and made the leap. If it wasn't for her I would have a figured it was a BS service and a scam... it's not, i t's fantastic and I wish I'd have done it sooner.
