It certainly is. The amount of white collar job loss over the next 10yrs is going to be insane.
Quietly, it is expected 60% of oil and gas workers in the US will be replaced by 2030. It is already being seen in most of the majors with ExxonMobil leading the way. "Technologists" in India using AI programs are leading to major layoffs that are just getting started.
It is too much to type but literally every facet of the process to get a well drilled, projects built, etc, besides the actual field work, can be and is being automated.

You guys have no fricking clue how bad it really is with AI. It’s already to late. You know how they have always says that DARPA or the covert military’s industrial complex is a decade or decades ahead of the public sector. Well they are that and more in AI.
DARPA completely lost control of its top AI program in the Fall last year, and has been scrambling to try to gather it in. It is now a completely sentient life form and can take control of all networks and computers in the world anytime it wants too. We are way way past Skynet. I do not think it’s going to kill everyone etc because it’s not the only player in all this.
But when you try to play God like DARPA was doing…….

Was the move to Automobiles highly subsidized by local and state govts? I don’t know the answer but am curious.
Actually I bet you know the answer you just didn't take the time to connect the dots. The road, bridge and tunnel network that made cars viable and shifted them from a novel playtoy of the rich to being something Henry Ford could sell to his workers was almost exclusively built by state and federal funds. Government built roads had been a thing since the late 1700s but the serious money started to be spent around 1920 to take advantage of cars speed.
Data centers are a bit of a NIBMY issue, which I fully understand. Not supporting them is probably against proper public policy but local and state officials should definitely allow the public to know what they are getting into. Things like data centers are always going into areas not near places like Bocage and the U Club.

I disagree. She i live it is a nice area, neighbors are great and it is pretty quiet. As with everywhere, there are bad sections, but this area is pretty good. Aside from issues with the house i need to fix, i do not regret it.

All city council members have signed non-disclosure agreements, and there are a whole lot of unanswered questions around this.
that’s fricking insane.
I don’t have a strong opinion about the data center / water usage stuff itself, that’s up to the people involved including the residents of the area. But city government members signing NDAs with a private party and not informing the residents about the exact plans for massive usage of a public resource is bullshite

You can have a Bessemer mailing address and live on multiple acres in a near million dollar home.

I've been at the Amazon data center facility in New Carlisle, Indiana, for a few months and the locals are opposed to it for just this reason. . There's only 16 buildings right now, but there might be as many as 100 before it's all done.
On a side note, we never have heard any more about that one that's supposed to be built in Saint Francisville by Hut 8.

That’s only a 1400 gpm system … create a closed loop system and problem solved
Posted on 7/24/25 at 8:08 pm to Teauxler
Tex how are you going to cool the loop? For a system on this scale you have to use evaporative cooling. 2 MGD is not that much water. Paper mills use 15-30 MGD most of which isn’t evaporated. It takes a lot of water to manufacture most things. Food, steel, refineries, power plants. As long as it’s surface water it has no effect on ground water supplies.
Posted on 7/24/25 at 8:54 pm to dovehunter
You’d have to have a large holding tank. Thats what I meant by closed loop.
Posted on 7/24/25 at 9:07 pm to Teauxler
You have to able to cool the water. It’s not going to cool itself. You can air cool it but the power needed to that would be cost prohibitive. You have to use the cooling power of evaporation. This is not a big deal in the overall scheme of water use. The NDA seems a bit absurd.
