The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on Friday approved new standards that would replace Common Core.

More than 100 educators from 30 parishes, as well as parent, business and education organizations, had input into the Louisiana State Student Standards, according to Kevin Calbert, BESE spokesman. The standards apply to English and math.
quote:

Calbert said the new standards will:

Provide developmentally appropriate content for all grades of courses while maintaining high expectations.
Allow teachers the freedom to determine the most appropriate method of instruction and choice of texts.
Provide teachers with more clarity about what is expected of students by making the standards less vague and less open to multiple interpretations.
Promote financial literacy and the study of money in earlier grades.
Order high school skills taught in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

Sounds awesome, but I have a feeling LA will find a way to screw it up.

ETA: I guess the big question is will EngageNY still be the curriculum?

There's something that we do very well in this state. That something is spending a lot of money fricking things up.

It still amazes me how many college students have bad grammar and cannot spell or organize a paper. I'm no English genius, but I figured that stuff out by the fifth grade.

Don't get too excited. Other states are doing this, too. To be sure, the curriculum will still be "common core"--just without the villanous name attached.

They aren't. Alabama school graduation rates have improved dramatically since their implementation. (I don't know what the results have been in LA).

Since it's been successful, they've found a way to destroy it by calling it a federal government standard being forced down people's throats (it wasn't) and attaching Obama's name to it (he had nothing to do with it). It won't make it through next year, because voters and the people they elect are fricking morons.

Maybe. Kansas just managed to craft a bill with wording that prohibits AP and IB classes from being taught in the state.

My first thought is "surely they won't take it to that point". Then I remember how ignorant many people are.

This is nothing more than the rebranding of the same product.

Common core is for dummies. I guess I'll never understand the hype because I'm not a dumbass that needs stupid arse concepts like it to perform simple math

I want to say they changed liked 3 total standards from Common Core. This was to appease the nut bags.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

In other words, old people can't understand it so it must be the work of the devil.

I understand that the world is getting dumber so we need to come up with baby steps for the retards.

It may work but if you don't need to take baby steps you shouldn't have to.

Yea I was the kid who got points taken off for not showing my work but always had the right answer.
