We do stuff 2-3 times a month with friends and family. Watch LSU/Saints games, just hang out, whatever. We usually half arse rotate where we do it. Usually the first thing people ask is, what you need us to bring. Whoever is hosting usually cooks the main thing, and we just all bring other stuff to help out.

Now, this is 10-20 people, not 100. If he's asking you to cook a jambalaya, he is asking you to cook the main thing. Now maybe he is just asking for help from a buddy cooking it, which isn't a big deal. Surely he isn't asking you to pay for and cook a jambalaya for 100 people right?

You really need to edit your OP and add the 100 people thing because I was about to pop off on you

I mean even if you’re doing something simple like jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs etc that’s a big undertaking. I’d tell my buddies to frick off

I’m 50 and maybe this is just old school but .......growing up my parents threw two to three parties a year and NEVER asked invited guest to bring ANYTHING to the party. In fact I remember on more that one occasion my father making someone who brought booze to go put it back in their car.

Prepare 50 chilli cheese(shredded) dogs and cut them in half. Bake em and takem. Take a bowl of pico de gallo or just chopped onions for the topping. Casual gourmet? Or just sucker up and clear your day for cooking

Happens to me all the time since I can cook some good stuff that people like, especially in bulk proportions needed for parties.

Most of the time it is for family members and that is OK with me, but when someone I know casually does this, it kind of chafes my nuts and I am more prone to decline the invitation since I don't like being used.

I'm a tad older at 67 and have thrown a big Thanksgiving day party for years and NEVER ask anyone to bring anything or to chip in for the cost of the event. If they bring something, I'm grateful and will put it out to be part of the meal, but it is not mandatory.

I host a party and it's all on me.

Just from that number my response would be asking what are we all cooking together.

I will group cook a jambalaya with him, but I'm not sacrificing my day to be a personal chef.

I read it more as dish to pass, not as the op catering the entire event for free

In which case asking for food after the invite is accepted, instead of when the invite was extended is the major issue

Exact opposite. Half a dozen you all chip in and do pot luck. If it’s 100, you supply the amenities. It’s like a wedding reception, it’s trashy if you ask people to bring food and drink.

I would never invite guests to a party then ask them what kind of food they're bringing. That's tacky. But, if I chose to bring something I'd get something from Costco for that many people.

I feel like you’re way over exaggerating here to get sympathy for your case and in reality 100 people is 7 or 8.

If it’s honestly that big of a deal just grab a lot of chips or a veggie try. Otherwise stop whining and just make something and enjoy the party.

IDGAF about anyone's sympathy.

If it were only a small gathering I wouldn't have come here with this question.
