Agree it looks like one but he said it is at least 1.5" long.

I mean, he'd be close, anyway.

I could see where a hysterical man and self-described "big, hairy pussy" could overshoot a measurement by a bit.

If it's a cicada killer, it's a small one. They get 3-4 inches. Eerie as hell when one flies near enough for you to feel the buzz, but they're supposed to be docile, except vs cicadas.

Should I be concerned there’s a Yellowjacket nest in the ground near my mailbox then?

I wouldn’t be unconcerned.

Assuming you’re right about the size, that’s a cicada killer.

It’s a bit odd because I’ve never seen one this late in the year, not have I ever seen one with a black head/thorax and an orange abdomen before. But only a few types of wasp/hornet get that big in the US, and based on the small head it would have to be a cicada killer. It might have recently molted.

They are harmless but definitely intimidating. They are solitary wasps that dig nests in the ground, where they bury cicadas along with their larvae. They’re only active a couple of months each year.

The wings don't seem to be the right color for a cicada killer. A cicada killer has reddish-brown or rust color wings. The one he killed has dark colored or black wings. The markings near the head also don't seem right to be a cicada killer.

Southern Yellow Jacket

Given that it’s single, it could be a relocating queen as is customary around this time of year.

I think you’re right, actually.

The poster who said it’s a southern yellow jacket queen nailed it:

The orange abdomen tells you it’s a queen, which also explains the size.
