Paralegal is a terrible choice for someone who can be picky about their next job. I say this as a former attorney.

If she’s cute she’ll leave you for a lawyer.

I can’t believe this is 4 pages and half of it are people whining about my law school exaggeration. Get over it.

Basically this. You don't get paid shite here in SWLA though.

NOTHING in ANY field pays well in SWLA. We’ve discussed leaving because the jobs in Dallas and Houston that she would qualified for pays 3-4x the amount than here. But my job pays 3-4x what she gets paid here and 3-4x less anywhere else.

Frustrating to say the least.

She should find a paralegal opening and apply. I always preferred to teach paralegals from scratch rather than them pretending they knew anything because they took a class at Delgado

This. I’m looking for a paralegal because my current one is moving. If someone has drive, a little common sense and ability, I will hire them completely inexperienced.

I was thinking of going to law school at one point and an attorney friend recommended becoming a paralegal first to make sure I would like working on law (he hated it). Since I had a bachelor's already, I was able to do a 6 month ABA-accredited program to get a certification. I worked as a paralegal for a year and hated it. Law was not for me so I am glad I went that route.

You can go to the American Bar Association website to find accredited programs in your area. She can also look for a legal assistant job. Many firms hire for them without experience.

I ended up working in HR and the classes I took have actually been really helpful especially when dealing with employment law and worker's comp.

There is a difference between a paralegal and legal assistant though. Most paralegals only work on discovery and some times goes to court with the attorneys. Legal assistants work on scheduling and other minor tasks. My employer considers me as a "hybrid."

This is my paralegal too. Some firms keep a strict hierarchy and defined tasks between the legal assistants and paralegals, but I’ve found those are mostly defense firms or corporate firms. Most PI and family law shops will have hybrids unless you’re at a mill like Gordon or Morris where it is very process-oriented.

If she changes her mind about paralegal, tell her to think about teaching. In my humble opinion, there is a great need - especially for people who have been in the outside work force and have a sense of the world and some common sense.

She just needs a paralegal degree she can get get in two years if she already has a college degree. Then she needs to pick a side, insurance defense or plaintiffs if she wants to be involved in civil litigation, which is where vast majority of paralegal jobs exist or some sub speciality.

They can make decent money 70-85k etc but it’s a stressful job. The good ones are basically lawyers that can’t take depos. i used to have a great one then she decided to be a surgeons wife.

They generally get to go home and not think about work until they're back at the office, which you really can't put a price tag on if your job isn't of that sort

A good paralegal will get treated like a queen and will be well-compensated
