I wouldn't be making the money I make now and would be working a salary job instead of an hourly if I would have stuck it out to get my 4 year degree. There are many high paying professions to be found at technical colleges.

There is one in Mobile right by AUSTAL that if you are a state resident is free, I believe.

The one there by austal, isn't that one almost strictly for aluminum?

What certification are you talking about? AWS Certified welder or just certified at a certain employer? Each employers has their own set of rules. Typically a pipe test in a 6G position will certify you for all welds in the process you weld in.

Far more. It's a 100k+ job here. In the near future, welders will be in high demand.

There are. Depending on where you live and work, trades pay better than the average college grad's pay. I know a few people who didn't graduate HS, barely speak English and make 6 figs.

I know a guy making $30 hr. Plus $125 day per-diem. Thats not bad money for a HS dropout.

Learn to cry about everything. Learn to blame everything on the fitter. Know that you alone will be the cause of most accidents. Lower your IQ. Learn to wear those stupid hats everywhere you go. Realize that while you are sitting there with that smug look on your face (wearing those stupid hats), you are the only one besides the riggers who think you are a god. Everyone else thinks you're a d-bag..... Did I mention the heat and mud and more heat while wearing hot clothes, wearing a hood and working with HEAT. Never see family.

A year for basic tig if you go to a trade school. 3 years if you want to master all types. If you're a good welder in ship building or offshore work, you can bring home 70-120k a year.

Depends on if you have to wait for a vacancy in the trailer park. Otherwise I'm sure the no credit check applications are pretty easy to fill out to move in ASAP.

Sounds like a good gig. Who's hiring for helpers?

Nailed it. At least that was my opinion working in Detroit with union pf/welders. They are the biggerst primadonnas.....With that said, if I was 18 again, say frick college and learn how to weld. Anyone who works in industrial construction knows about the demand for welders right now and for at least the next 10 years. They are absolutely making 6 figures. When we were finishing our project in Detroit getting ready for a TA, I saw tons of trucks with TX and LA license plates. Very surprising considering the union stronghold there.

I've spent most of my adult life on pipelines and while they certainly do make the money that's been talked about in this thread, for every welder living in a big fine house, there are three showing up on a job with no money for lunch or cigarettes. I've had two guys just this month show up broke who I know absolutely for a fact have already made $60-70k on the year. Everyone jokes about meth but the truth is that its not the hole in daddy's arm, its the multiple ex-wives. That's where the money goes.
Hanging on to some of the money is tough for a travelling man but it can be done.
And anyone thinking of welding school should consider a NACE Coating Inspector Cert.. If you don't have an insider trying to hook you up you'll need Level II to land that first job but once you've got a job or three under your belt you'll be turning down work left and right.

We used to have a mobile welder come out and fix shite for us. He worked 3-4 days a week, and just did whatever he wanted the rest of the week. Want him there on a Friday and you are paying time and a half. Told me he cleared $150k easily. Charged $150/hr, but could fix damn near anything we broke

I went to ABC school $25 per semester bc ABC sponsored me (31 on ACT in high school). Took and passed the plate test in 6 months, pipe in just under a year.
There were a few dipshits going on two years and still not good enough to pass plate.
It's all at your own pace there.
I ended up not going into welding field and stayed in my current profession. I'm still thankful that my boss talked me out of welding, but I still have a skill to fall back on if needed.

I have always wanted to learn and if the world ever takes a shite it would be awesome to have a trade to help with any pod of humans that I find myself living with. IE - Apocolypse
In all seriousness though, I sell gas and welding supplies for a living. Some of my customers can barely tie their own shoes and make more money than me.
If you're going to go to welding school though, learn how to tig aluminum. Anybody with opposable thumbs can mig and stick.

First off, don't listen to these snotty nose punks here on the OT. Welders make good money and most will make more than these fricking pussies with a college degree.
I wised up and quit a job around a year and a half ago that required my BS degree. I now am happier, love what I do, and make much more money in a plant.
So many of these kids have no clue what life is about and what most jobs out of college really pay. Best of luck to you rooster.

You don't have to go to school to weld. Some of the best welders I know practiced on their breaks, showed their foreman and when the foreman thought it good enough, they went and took the test.
Bingo, this is the route to go. Oh I guess you could go to a school but you won't learn much.
