Quick Question

For the good paying jobs like turn arounds and pipeline work, dont you have to join the union?

Just asking

Someone needs to open a welding school in Lake Charles area. I know they have the ABC school but a new up to date welding training center in this area could potentially partner up with on of the 'players" in the industry and make a killing. If or should I say when this work pops in the area due to the lack of manpower welders will be shipped in from overseas.

Absolutely not. I was only joking, and playing off the stereotypical OT reply. I've spent the better part of my adult life working in plants and factories 60 hours a week, until I decided to go back to college. Believe me, I know plenty about "the real world". My dad was an underwater wielder in the Navy, and started a business building custom head racks for car haulers when he got out of the Navy. I have nothing for respect for guys with legitimate trades.

I have a college degree and have thought about going to a trade school to become a welder. A lot of it sounds enticing. It's an actual skill as opposed to all of the bullshite I learned in college.

And put away a 30 pack of stones in an evening, but you don't really get paid for that.

And I don't see that much of the turnaround work in the plants is union either unless you get up to the northeast.
These skilled labor guys chasing turnarounds all over are making fcking bank. In addition to all of the over time, they are getting anywhere from $80 to $100 per day per diem among other things.

I talked to the owner of one company in Texas who does some specialty welding and he thinks he is going to have to start paying his guys double time on every thing over 40 hours per week to attract enough people.

There is no set period of time to become a certified welder. Normally after attending Vo Tech school an individual will be able to take a six inch butt weld pipe test and pass. This does not mean that the person is a journeyman welder. There are many types of welding and welding tests, and like most skills it takes many years to master. As mentioned by others, welders are in demand and well qualified welders can make in excess of $100,000 per year.

however, its worth mentioning that some of the welders making this sort of money are likely traveling job-to-job. Not saying it isn't a lucrative field, but like all professions it has its sacrifices. Not all of them are in climate controlled shops, working set hours, and home with teh wife and kids every night. Some of them live out of their campers most of the year so you need to factor in those expenses when considering their salary. Just sayin'.

On average, how long does it usually take for someone to become a certified welder after they start a Vo Tech school like ABC?

I worked 12 years around welders. If you want to weld DONT go to school. Its a waste of time. Instead get on with a fabrication company, learn to tack, learn how the business works, see if you can handle the environment. If you can do that, show up to work everyday, pass a piss test and work safe the company will 99/100 pay for you to go school to learn how to pass a welding test.

I seen go to welding school and come into the industry thinking they are top money guys. If you have no experience in the industry you are going to start out as a helper. If you have no exp in the industry but you went to welding school you will be a top money helper.

If you want to learn how to weld and not just pass the welding test, skip the vo tech classes.

Many companies will hire you and train you from scratch.

A lot of welders I have seen from "welding schools" can pass the test but that's about it.

In this case, field experience is the best way to train.

I have always wanted to learn and if the world ever takes a shite it would be awesome to have a trade to help with any pod of humans that I find myself living with. IE - Apocolypse
