Most homes that are built "hurricane proof" still can't withstand a Category 4 or 5 hurricane.

Different standards in different parts of Florida; in south FL buildings have to withstand a Cat 5, in the panhandle it's a Cat 3.

They call that area the "forgotten coast" for a reason.

I saw stuff about this house; it was built with reinforced concrete and the pilings are 50' tall. It's interesting that it also largely protected the house behind it as well. It looks like the beach facing side still got siding blown off and some roof damage but it looks to be in pretty good shape.

No they won’t. That area has height restrictions in place to avoid those eyesores.

they are going to shite all over that area with more condos and it will end up being a tourist trap area, compared to hidden gems the area from mexico beach to cape san blas were.

Pretty sure there are actually rules against it there.

Those rules will disappear with the stroke of a pen, the potential for long term exponential growth in city government revenue from property taxes, building permits, and sales tax growth is not something local lawmakers will ignore. You can also be bet on building codes being changed to assure that there will be no one building or rebuilding a home on the beach without spending a million dollars plus. This type of transition has occurred at ever beach community that has experienced a similar disaster.

The real victory here is the fact that his wife probably nagged the frick out of him while he was building it ‘you don’t need all this extra concrete and anchor bolts blah blah blah’

We do a good job of keeping you frickers away from our actual beaches.

still, what did he win for being the last guy standing. his neighborhood is shite for the next decade.

Well, I guess he could technically say the property includes a semi-private beach.

I have been waiting for this thread because I'm very interested in the building/engineering techniques that allow a private beach-front residence to withstand a Hurricane Michael.

I hope that some folks can chime in and educate us a bit in this area.
well you have questions, what are they?

I knew of it, but I've only known of a couple of people who vacation there. I've heard people talking about it as a good place to go to get away from everyone.

The outer walls are concrete. I’d imagine that the interior walls are Sheetrock

How exactly is a rainbow made? How exactly does a sun set? How exactly does a posi-trac rear-end on a Plymouth work?

Furring strips and sheetrock on the inside.

You can pull electrical through if you run the conduits ahead of time as well.
