It’s not a geographical boundary. It’s your MawMaw.
If your MawMaw had shrimp and oysters in her gumbo, you are a bayou Cajun no matter where you live.

Wow, learn something new every day. Two kinds of Cajuns. Maybe 23andMe could help?

Seafood/pork

This is actually a very good post. Let’s talk about eggs in gumbo while we’re at it.

23andMe doesn’t have a clue about Cajun ancestry. They lump it in the catch-all category of Western European.

The Basin is a good start. Nobody comes from DTB West of the Basin.

One is short and stupid with bad genetics and the other is, well, the same fricking thing. At least they’re both fun to point and laugh at.

I have never heard of anyone, anywhere putting eggs in their gumbo. Now it is pretty common to put them in a shrimp stew.

Highway 90 from New Iberia to Opelousas. East of that is bayou Cajuns west would be prairie. Of course you still have sub groups in that. One of the strangest things about it is the cajun French spoken in different areas is different. I would say maybe 5-10% of the words are different

I've heard the terms "Colonial French" and "Prairie French", but not Bayou and Prairie. Can someone define or give the background behind the two terms?

Then you haven’t been paying attention because it’s been a thing for a very long time. My grandmother used to kill a hen to put in a gumbo and would use that same hen’s eggs as well. I’m talking maybe 60-70 years ago she would do this. To say this isn’t something that people do is almost like saying you never heard of people putting okra either.
