I’ll tell you first hand that what gets sent to be recycled doesn’t not get recycled necessarily. It depends on the value of the finished recycled product. If the prices are low they sit on it. I was there roughly 10 years ago and at that time they hadn’t actively recycled in some time. Here’s the kicker. Guess where all the card board/paper gets sent if values are down....back to the landfill. At least that’s what used to happen.

The company I worked was strong-armed by the city into picking up glass because they wanted to give people piece of mind regarding the monthly recycling fee they were charged.

Somebody did an investigation I think in Houston a year or 2 ago. They followed the recycling trucks around and they went and dumped their trucks at the same place the trash trucks dumped. Total scam.

My favorite is that at my place of employment, Janiking worker will look you straight in the eye, pickup your regular trash can and dump it in a large bin. Then take your recycle trash can and dump it into same large bin. They don't even bat an eye.

That's probably just what they process at the Tom Drive facility. They send a good bit of stuff to CACR and other places.
ETA: I wouldn't be surprised if only 25% ultimately gets recycled though.

Most recycling isn't worth much. When working for a large corporation in order to recycle materials to make it profitable in the supply chain they had to be separated by type and bailed with enough to fill a truck. They only successfully recycled clear plastics and clean cardboard. They tried other materials at times but couldn't make a go at it. By and large consumer level recycling is a scam. Outside of scrap metal nothing gets recycled on any sort of scale. Just think about it, what will they PAY you for, that is what is worth recycling.

<10% actually recycled is not an accurate number for the EBR Recycling program.
When you factor in that, on average, 30 tons of "garbage" per day is collected too in both the residential and commercial recycling program, that in itself skews the "collected" number. A lack of discipline and recycling education hurts the overall program. Materials placed for collection that do not fit and thus get landfilled.
Last I checked (Pre Covid), aluminum was paying $600/ton, tin was north of $300/ton, OCC was around $100/ton, white paper/newsprint was a wash (no charge/no rebate), and plastics were all over the place. And you lose on glass.
So certainly there is some material landfilled, either contamination or a non-recyclable, but the majority is sent to mills for recycling purposes.

I’m not sure if things have changed, but China quit taking our plastic recycling last year, which put a pretty strong halt to recycling, in general. I’d believe that almost none of what goes into the bin is ever actually recycled. Maybe cans and some cardboard, but almost no plastic.
